Assignment 2: Finding My Sociological Place

HW2: Finding My Sociological Place When I try to define my “place” in the world, what comes to my mind isn’t a tangible place yet, but instead my goals and aspirations. It’s to be a successful chartered financial analyst working for a successful company. In terms of sociology however, my place in this world at this moment is my school and my friends. I have many statuses associated to myself, both ascribed and achieved. An ascribed status would is “ a status into which one is born” (Conley). An achieved status is the opposite, “a status into which one enters”(Conley). Some of the ascribed statuses that define me is my biological sex which is male, since that cannot be changed, as well as my age which is 19. Some achieved statuses for me would be my current occupation as a tutor for macroeconomics, as well as my position of Vice President of Legislative Affairs for Diablo Valley College, both of which are earned statuses. Due to the amount of extracurricular activities that I’ve been actively pursuing, It has been increasingly easier to notice sociological aspects that are a part of my life. Socialization is “the process by which individuals internalize the values, beliefs and norms in a given society and learn to function as a members of the society” (Socialization Powerpoint). Some examples of socialization occurring in my life would be during my orientation into becoming a tutor as well as the tryouts I had to go through to become a member of the soccer team. In tutoring I had to learn how to mentor and assist students effectively, and for soccer I had to be a team player that could work and coordinate with other teammates.
