Identification. The Republic of Indonesia, the world 's fourth most populous nation, has 203 million people living on nearly one thousand permanently settled islands. Some two-to-three hundred ethnic groups with their own languages and dialects range in population from the Javanese (about 70 million) and Sundanese (about 30 million) on Java, to peoples numbering in the thousands on remote islands. The nature of Indonesian national culture is somewhat analogous to that of India—multicultural, rooted in older societies and interethnic relations, and developed in twentieth century nationalist struggles against a European imperialism that nonetheless forged that nation and many of its institutions. The national culture is most easily observed in cities but aspects of it now reach into the countryside as well. Indonesia 's borders are those of the Netherlands East Indies, which was fully formed at the beginning of the twentieth century, though Dutch imperialism began early in the seventeenth century. Indonesian culture has historical roots, institutions, customs, values, and beliefs that many of its people share, but it is also a work in progress that is undergoing particular stresses at the beginning of the twenty-first century.…

East Asia became one of the most advanced and prosperous regions in the post- classical era due to the resurgence of the imperial style rule. After the collapse of the Han Dynasty, East Asia was plagued with 350 years of turmoil and destruction. This ended however when the Sui Dynasty came into power. This dynasty was able to bring back the centralized imperial rule due to a few successful military campaigns. The Sui dynasty lasted for less than thirty years, but it made way for the Tang and Sond dynasties to emerge and become stable and prosperous.…

Southwest Asia is the term geographers’ use when referring to the Middle East. "Middle East" is a political term coined by the British in the 1930's to distinguish the region from both the Far East, which included China, Japan and Indochina, and the Near East, which included portions of Western Europe. All of these areas are truly only "east" of Europe. In order to emphasize a more global perspective, geographers prefer to use the politically neutral term "Southwest Asia" because it does not connote a Western European bias.…

China’s first great thinker and teacher name was Confucius. He came up with the golden rule, which stated: “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” Confucius urged people to “measure the feelings of others by one’s own,” for “within the four seas all men are brothers.” He traveled through China trying to persuade government leaders to follow Confucianism. Over time, he won many followers who honored him as a great teacher.
