Ashley Case
From the case description, we know that Ashley is 13 years old, who recently disclosed to one of the teacher's from school that she is scared of her mum's boyfriend who entered into the bath when she was in the bath making sexual remarks . Ashley is concerned that herself and her mum could be exposed at some risks if this information will be passed on. The focus of the assessment must be Ashley, whether the situation could be a potential risk or unmet needs ,or even both of them.
In order to be able to understand and assess Ashley's world and her vision about recent events, the S.W needs a profound understanding of theories around human development. The importance of understanding and knowledge regarding this aspect ,is stipulated in

Being said that, the S..W must be able to interview and to communicate effectively with Ashley who is already capable to anticipate the bad consequences for her mum in case that the information that had been disclosed will be shared. We don't know if Ashley discussed her concerns with her mum or other family members, so she needs to be approached sensitively , as she might feel ashamed, fearful or reluctant. The ability of the S.W to respond to Ashley's emotional needs , to communicate effectively and to build a trusting relationship at a crisis point is a core component for the profession itself. It is crucial for the S.W to understand that the strongest feelings can be regulated and handled through strong relationships building. (Sameroff and Emde, 1989). Knowledge drawn from attachment (Bowlby,1997) and development theories or empirical studies , plays a significant role in understanding and mediating the dramatic effects of neglect and abuse. Howe (2005), outlines that ‘If relationships are where things developmental can go wrong, then relationships are where they are most likely to be put right.
Ashley would need a healthy network of relationships to buffer the distress and the pain. She is currently withdrawn, her attendance at school is poor, and she does not engage meaningfully with the educational environment like she had used to do six months ago. It is evident that she does not receive patient, consistent and repetitive loving
