Asha Bhosle is an Indian singer who has fascinated the entire country with her voice. Asha was born on September 8, 1933 in a small village in sangli, Maharashtra to the Marathi family of pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar.She was the third child of Dinanath Mangeshkar and Shudhhamati. Her nickname is The Queen of Indi pop. Her father pandit Dinanth Mangeshkar was a theater artist and a classical singer. He trained her in classical music at a very young age .Her other sibling are melody Late Mangeshkar, Hridayanth Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Mangeshkar.She lost her father when she was nine years old. He died of heart disease. After the death of her father the family moved puna to Kolhapur and then to Mumbai. Bhosle and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in movies to support the family. At the age of sixteen Bhosle got married with thirty one years old Ganpatrao Bhosle secretly. They married against their family wishes and had two kids. Ganpatrao was he sister secretary. The relationship with Ganpatrao made a tension between Lata and Asha. Their marriage she moved back to her mother’s home with two children and pregnant with the third children is Hemant Bhosle. He is a pilot. Asha’s daughter Varsha, Who is youngest child is Anand Bhosle, has studied business and film direction. He manages Asha’s career .She was one of the legendary playback singer. Asha’s career started in 1943.Most of her music consists of ghazals, traditional classical music, Quwwalis, Bhajans, film music, folk music, and Rabindra sangeet. She sung in fourteen languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi, Nepali, English, Czech and Russian. She has sung over 10,000songs.She is one of the greatest playback singers in Bollywood history. She did playback singing for more than 1000 movies. The age of ten she sang her first film song Chala Chala Nav Bala for the Marathi Film Majha Bal in 1943. She faced a lot of struggle in her initial years while her sister Lata was in such a demand. In 1948 she made her debut in the Hindi film Chunaria for the song:Saawan aaya”. Asha was noticed for her different playful voice in this song. Asha sang more songs than any other playback singers in the 1950’s. During the 1950’s she sung more than other playback singer,. Lata Mangeshkar, Geeta Dutt and Shamshad Begum were main singers at that time. During those days her sister Lata Mangeshkar got offers to sing for the heronies.Asha got the assignments that were rejected by the leading singers. Her songs were composed by A R Qureshi, Sajjad Hussain and Ghulam Mohammed Mostly the songs were meant for the sidelined roles like vamps, cabaret numbers or c-grade movies. Asha worked so hard to make it to the top. She sang the song “Nanhe Munne Bachche” in 1954 with Mohammed Rafi in the film Boot polish and this song became very popular. In 1956 she got her first break with the movie C.I.D under the director O.P. Nayyar. Nayyar first met Asha in 1952 at the recording of Chham Chhama Chham. He realized her talent and gave her patronage. She first achieved success in B.R. Chopra’s Nayadur (1957) Composed by Nayyar. This was the first time she got to sing all the songs for the lead actress. During1957 to 1962, Sachin Dev Burman, a famous director and Lata Mangeshkar were not in good terms. At that time, S.D. Burman used Asha Bhosle as his leading female singer. They made many hit songs in movies such as Kaala Pani, Insaan jag Utha, Kaala Bazzar, and Teen Deviyaan. Even after 1962, they recorded many other songs jointly. The most well-known songs of Asha Bhosle were with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. The song that made her a lead singer in 1963 was Ab ke Bars. Asha has worked with other compesers too. Music composer C. Ramachandran used Asha as the leading singer in V.Shantram’s films.
