In democratic nations today, the ability to vote is presumed. Many consider this right a “natural right,” while others consider it a privilege or even a civic duty. Back in the 19th century, women wanted changes in the roles. Susan B. Anthony, who was arrested in 1872 for voting illegally, had changed women to have great roles. She has sacrificed herself to gain liberty and equality. This made the women to rise up and revolt against US government.
“Our democratic-republican government is based on the idea of the natural right of every individual member thereof to a voice and a vote in making and executing the laws” (Source A). This was a part of Susan B. Anthony’s speech. She stated this to clarify that governments are supposed protect and follow by citizen’s will, instead of making and executing laws that are disadvantaging people. Or people can find a word in any of the grand documents left us by the fathers that assumes for gov. the power to create or to confer rights. Also, The Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, the constitutions of the several states and the organic laws of the territories, all alike propose to protect the people in the exercise of their God-given right. So, women should have equal rights and role same as the men’s.
There are many evidence that why women should have same roles as the men. In the Daily Graphic, one political cartoon by Thomas Wust was issued. (Source B) In the picture, men were wearing women’s clothes and women were wearing men’s clothes. I think that Thomas Wust made this picture to show the people, how would it feel to have role changed.
