Task 2- a sense of place
Usually in a book I can imagine the setting very well almost as if I am there, however I can only achieve this if the author has very good creative and descriptive writing. For example, in a book I recently read, the setting was a very rundown area in a council estate, obviously the book was about crime so this setting helped to aid the author because the meaning of the book by setting it in a typical criminal site.
Firstly, there is a council estate which helps to get across the criminal activity. Also at that start of the book, in the high street, the 3 main characters were just coming out of Lohore Fried Chicken when 4 gun shots were fired this is a good setting because you don’t expect gun shots in the high streets.
So in conclusion setting and a sense of place is extremely important when writing a book because otherwise there will be no backdrop to your plot.

Task 3- the importance of character
The importance of character in a book is really needed because otherwise you’ll forget the people and more importantly the plot. In some books I can remember the character perfectly whereas in others I forget them because the author hasn’t described them properly, also to make a character more memorable the author can you lots of descriptive devices.
In most books I think I am more likely to remember a villain because of the bad stuff they have done.
In Glory Garden (cricket book) I think hooker mad the strongest contribution to the book because he made all the decisions and captained the side, he makes the book more enjoyable because he makes you feel like you are right next to him playing the game all the time.
To conclude the importance of character is extremely significant because you will otherwise forget the characters and more vitally the plot.

Task 5- final essay
In this essay I have chosen 4 authors (Roald Dal that I believe are the best, I will outline why I have chosen

In every story the characters are the ones who captivate a reader. In Zusak’s novel “The book thief” he makes an effort to create characters with enough personality that they didn’t even need to be described. There are many attitudes and reactions that characters have trough out the book, and they give away who they really are. The characters seem so real that at a certain point, the reader could forget the characters are not real. One example of that “reality confusion” is how Death portraits himself as a human.…

It can help set the mood, influence the way characters behave, affect the dialog, foreshadow events, invoke an emotional response, reflect the society in which the characters live, and sometimes even plays a part in the story. It can also be a critical element in nonfiction as the setting provides the framework for what is being discussed” (The Writing Place). In order for the setting to flourish in a story, it is crucial for the details to be precise and descriptive. On the flip side, having too much sensory details can ruin the story. Furthermore, giving a complete background of where the scene takes place could overwhelm the reader and turn them off to the rest of the book. By giving the story the pertinent amount of details, the reader is able to construct the setting and scene themselves, which keeps the story flowing forward instead of…

The atmosphere of the setting for the story The Interlopers by Saki starts off and ends the same way as the characters within the story. The setting makes the mood as dark and gloomy, just like the two enemies in the story that are trying to kill one another and having a dispute over land they are both trying to claim. The setting changes as the nature around them beings to change and also becomes suspenseful. The ending to the story is a bit ironic because the two become friends, but they get attacked by a pack of wolves. The setting could really help determine what will happen in a story, and The Interlopers is a perfect example.…

Often times, it is the where and when that determines the what and why in a plot or story. The setting is the sole reason for why characters act the way they do or even why they exist within the plot. Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene illustrates this notion by making the setting such an intricate and irreplaceable piece of the plotline.
