Is Finny a good friend to Gene?
The story, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, is a story that takes place in the heart of Connecticut at Devon High School. The two main characters, Finny and Gene, were roommates at the all-boys school and became best friends. But soon their friendship would be tested as Gene starts to become jealous of Finny’s athletic abilities. Gene would fail the test as he later pushes Finny off a tree which ends injures Finny and ends his athletic days for the rest of his life. But Finny also does things that aggravated Gene. Although Phineas cares about Gene’s influences, it is also true that he is a bad influence towards Gene by encouraging him to break school rules and encouraging him to get away from his studies and therefore, Phineas is a bad friend. One reason that Finny was a bad friend is because he encourages Gene to break the rules of the school. Finny suggests, “Let’s go to the beach” (Knowles 45). Finny pressures Gene to go the beach when the school rules forbid going to the beach by bicycle for hours. “All right”, (Chapter 46) Gene said as he decided to give in to the peer pressure despite not wanting to go. It was not a great decision at all to go the beach because they risked being expelled from the school and they gave up study time that was important for Gene since he had a test the next morning. Another reason that Finny was a bad friend towards Gene is that he upsets Gene and aggravates him. “‘Come on, let’s go. We’ve got to be there. You never know, maybe he will do it this time.’ Oh for God sake.’ I slammed the French book. ‘What’s the matter?’ What a performance!’”, argued Finny and Gene. (Knowles 57). Finny tries to get Gene away from his studies which makes Gene think that Finny is trying to get ahead of him academically.
