As Addie Bundren lays dying in William Faulkner’s novel As I Lay Dying, Cash builds a coffin for Addie right outside her window. In response to this, Jewel vocalizes his utter disgust towards allowing Addie to listen to her coffin being built and broadcasting the fact that she is in the process of dying to the world. Faulkner emphasizes Jewel’s disgust towards where Cash is building Addie’s coffin through having Jewel repeat “One lick less” (Faulkner 15). Besides demonstrating Jewel’s disgust and frustration, the phrase additionally highlights how vulnerable Jewel is at this current point in time as well as a tinge of jealousy towards Cash. In Jewel’s mind, Cash is thriving from their mother dying as he is able to demonstrate “what a fine…

William Faulkner's style in As I Lay Dying is unique from other writers because of the way in which he focuses on the inner thoughts of each character that the chapter is focusing on instead of describing what the character is thinking. The chapters that Darl is the main character are complex and hard to understand because he describes things in poetic…
Often times in novels, there will be a character that has the ability to appear as little as possible and still be able to have one of the biggest impacts on the rest of the characters and on the novel as a whole. In As I Lay Dying, Addie Bundren is one of those types of characters. She has only one chapter in the entire book, yet is somehow able to have the biggest influence on the rest of the characters. She is the basis of the story, and everything relates back to her.…
On the surface As I Lay Dying is about a family who are on a quest in order to lay their mother to rest in Jefferson as she have requested. However, it can be seen that putting their mother to rest plays only a small fraction of their “real” intention since they all have their own quests to complete. For instance, the real intention for Anse taking this quest is for him to be able to acquire his false teeth while Dewey Dell’s real intention is to obtain some abortion pills. Nevertheless, in a way they are still on the same quest with the same destination without them realizing. It is a quest all where the characters (and even we as readers) must journey through. It is in fact the quest of death as Addie’s father has said “The reason for living…

The word insane means to have a deranged state of mind or someone who has a mental disorder. In As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, Darl is accused of being insane. He is not insane; he is simply trying to express himself in a different manner that his family is too ignorant to understand. His mother’s body has been above ground for nine days; that is enough reason for a person to become partially overwhelmed with, to others around him, insane ideas.…
Most authors give small details throughout the novel of where and when a story takes place, and the reader must piece the bits together. As I lay dying is no exception and like any other book gives many examples of setting. First off you can tell that the story takes place many years ago through simple statements given throughout the novel. For example, when it says that all of the women inside of the house had to use fans to cool themselves it suggests that air conditioning was not around yet, therefore it was an earlier time. (Page 81) Also throughout the entire beginning of the novel Cash’s only tools for building Addie’s coffin are a saw and hammer, there is no mention of any newer power tools. Then when Anse is talking…
My first impression of Cash was that he was a hardworking man. He spent most of the day working on the coffin for his mother. He seemed very selfless as he worked constantly on his mother’s coffin. Although the fact that he was building the coffin right outside his mothers window was somewhat disturbing to me. I would not want to watch a man build my coffin. To Cash this coffin was his last present to his dying mother and he wanted it to be perfect witch is why he would hold up every piece to show his mother to make sure it was perfect.…
As I Lay Dying is structured in such a way that the author has removed himself from the story. Basically, he allows his characters to tell their own story by switching between each character’s perspective. “As I Lay Dying is divided into fifty-nine sections which are described by most critics as the "interior monologue" or the "stream of consciousness" of the characters”…

Racism was prevalent shown by the whites-only libraries in Louisiana. After 15 years of living in Louisiana, Gaines moved to California, although he states Louisiana never left him. California had libraries available for the blacks also. In California, he lived with his mother and which inspired him to the point of writing about six novels and scores of short stories. In 1953, Gaines was drafted into the Army, and he later went on to study creative writing at Stanford University. While in the library, Gaines…
Introverts make up about 33% to 50% of the population in the United States (Goudreau). In the novel, As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner, Dewey Dell may be considered introverted, or a person who does not communicate their emotions well with others. However, each member of the Bundren family has something to hide, therefore Dewey Dell is not as introverted as the audience may think. Dewey Dell makes a preposterous decision when she decides to hide her pregnancy from her family. Dewey Dell, a character familiar with distrust in her backwards family, is also quick to betray her kin; this displays that secrets and withholding inner thoughts can cause one to act irrationally.…
William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying is a very complicated book telling an emotional journey from multiple perspectives. Out of all these characters, however, Darl seems to be at the center of all the passages. He has a little more than a third of the passages and becomes kind of the central essence for the work. Darl starts of calm and collected, but eventually the journey wears down on him and he descends into madness. In Darl’s first passages his language is mapped out and used very well. By the end of the book his dialect becomes very different and he seems very distant from the things happening around him. Faulkner uses a great amount of skill and word choice to display this and shows a great amount of character development. Overall Darl’s descent into madness seemed to be the main focus of the book.…
After the relationship between Addie and the rest of her family has been established, the next problem lies in Darl's relationship to the Bundren family, and especially their attitudes toward him. Darl is always elusive, complicated, thought-provoking, poetic in stream-of-consciousness observations, and especially observant of details. It is through Darl's eyes and observations that the reader gets a full perspective of the other characters.…
