Artist’s Statement

I remember when I was 8 years old I got a Barbie camera for Christmas. I loved it. I took pictures of everything. I took pictures of me and my cousin with makeup all over our face. I took pictures of my cats (Nuisance and Angel). I even took pictures of the sunset and it was beautiful.

I wanted to take more pictures but I ran out of film. I asked my dad for more film but he never brought me more. So then I just left my Barbie camera alone for a long time. Then my dad moved and I had to pack up my stuff. I found the camera. It brought back many memories. After we moved I forgot about the camera again. Then my stepsisters found it and started playing with it. I told them not to because its mine and

Jennifer Latson wrote a paper about the true origins of Barbie. The famous Barbie doll that we grew up with had a somewhat dark origin that began a long time ago. Born in Germany in 1952, the dolls original name was Lilli, she was unlike Barbie due to her unusual curves and toes that, “She doesn’t even have a foot.” Despite this, Lilli was so popular in Germany that she became a plastic doll for all the kids to play with. Lilli also had her own comics, but she was sexualized in these comics. In one comic she was naked with only a newspaper covering herself, and another comic had a policeman say she couldn’t wear a two-piece bikini and Lilli asked which one she should take off. Regardless of these things, she became a popular doll, inspiring…

Society today, has changed people in the way how they act, and dress. The short story Barbie Q explains that a Barbie is the ideal woman. The Barbie is an example of what women believe to be perfect. The quote “So what if we didn’t Get our new bendable legs Barbie in nice clean boxes and had to buy them on Maxwell street all water soaked and sooty”(Cisneros). This quote means that anyone would buy a Barbie for a cheaper price because they didn’t have the money at the time and who would care if the dolls were wet or smoked. For example the barbie with the melted leg putting a dress on the doll would cover the leg. this event talks about women these days where men rate the women from very beautiful to ugly as they show in the story where the…

Her friends and family begin to tell her how to act around others. They tell her to “play coy” and to “come on hearty.” These are two very different ways to act and she not sure how to act because all she sees are her imperfections. She probably wonders how “a fat nose on thick legs” would act. Piercy tells us “her good nature wore…

I remember getting my mother’s old Barbie dolls and wondering why her long blonde hair was different. Since Barbie’s were created there has been several different versions of these dolls. Controversies came in an uproar about the skinny, white, long blonde haired Barbie. So, the Barbie company created African-American or brunette and men Barbie dolls. Other issues people had with the dolls were this mistreatment of the dolls. For an example, “Malibu Barbie, shimmery and golden. My parents couldn't afford the Dream house, so my doll lived in a pinewood box. I hand-sewed her bed and sofa with jagged, tangled stitches. I gifted her hand puppets and sock dresses, then chopped her hair into uneven patches. I grew a year older and gave her up to my brother and his friends, who ripped off her head and crammed her body with firecrackers. Her limbs, caked with black soot, scattered in the front yard, discovered by the dog weeks later.” (Ibarra, 34) Personally I don’t think they way children treat their toys should be a huge controversial issue. Children are going to do whatever they want with their toys. Some kids may throw their Barbie’s around or they may treat them like their “Babies”. (Omni, 16, 76.) Omni made an article about a lady named Barbara Bell who had some different view toward her responses from the disrespect of the Barbie’s. “Hearing of her experience, Bell's colleagues suggested she channel Barbie. So, Bell started the Barbie Channeling Newsletter. For $3, she sends readers Barbie's answer to a personal query along with a copy of the newsletter. “"I go into a light trance," says Bell, 44, whose nickname is also Barbie, "”and the words come flying out. There are 700 million Barbie dolls in the world with no voice that's real." Do Barbie’s or dolls in general have a mind of their own to show…

The second favorite moment in my life was my first orientation day in kindergarten as I was excited to go to school for the first time. When I walked into the class, I remember running around and exploring new equipment while my mom and the teacher were talking. When it was time to leave, I started to cry very loudly and sat in a position where my mom could not move me. My mom waited about 15 minutes but I still didn’t stop crying, so she had no option but to drag me down the hallways where everyone was staring at us. My mom told me “get up, people will think I’m kidnapping my own daughter”, but I was still not wanting to go home. The object that I would use to represent this moment is a crayon because I was in the coloring station when I was…

Society can take over the way people see themselves. In Marge Piercy’s poem, “Barbie Doll,” a young girl was judged for her looks and being herself. Due to this young girl’s strong mind set, she tried to stay true to herself, but could only handle so much pressure. Throughout her entire life, she was being compared to a symbolic perfect Barbie Doll who had the beautiful cosmetic fixed face that everyone imagines girls to be, and the irony of how pretty everyone thought she was on her deathbed demonstrated how the standards in society make people second guess who they really are.…

    Barbie Doll Poem

In “Barbie Doll” by Marge Piercy has connected with me more then any other poem in the book so far. “Barbie Doll” is connected with me as a male because it is what all people go through, not just women like it states in the poem. But all men and women have a stereotype of being the perfect person. You have to have a tan; you have to have the perfect chiseled abs. If you go and pick up a magazine more then likely you will find a man or women that are considered perfect. The world wants people to change their ways. What they were what they eat, pretty much their whole lifestyle. If you don’t wear the right clothes or if you’re to poor to afford nice clothes then you get laughed at or get beat up because you’re not as cool as the other kids. I remember…

Living in a Barbie World: Modern Stereotypes of WomenIn 1973, Marge Piercy wrote a poem that follows the life of a young girl growing up with modern expectations that she struggles to conform to. "Barbie Doll" uses different aspects of a woman's life to express the different pressures on women today. The first aspect Piercy uses to emphasize the stereotypes attached to women are images, colours, and toys that are traditionally associated with girls; the main character of the poem, is given gifts that are very feminine. The other aspects Piercy utilizes are the 'magic' of puberty, and she also uses the popular children's doll Barbie, as seen in the title of her poem, to highlight society's expectations on women, the main character at the end of the first stanza is ridiculed by a peer because of her looks. Stereotypes of how a woman 'should' appear and behave like have always been around in some shape or form. These 'ideals' are instilled in girls at a young age. These 'ideals' however can be very difficult for women that cannot or wish not to conform to this 'norm', as like the main character in the poem who in the fourth stanza has taken her life because she couldn't fit in. Piercy relates diverse portions of a woman's life to effectively connect Barbie doll expectations of women and her subject.…

In order for a product to be recognised as a “Popular-Culture” they must have four distinguishing characteristics. They are; firstly: being associated with commercial products; second: developing from a local, to a national, to a global level; thirdly: allowing consumers to have widespread access to it and lastly: constantly changing and evolving. All of which Barbie has shown throughout the years. These changes have been proceeding as with the procession of technology. Barbie started off with a brush to an electric straighter and now shown with advanced gadgets. Within this report the role of technology in influencing the distinguishing characteristics of Barbie will be shown through various ways and therefore…

    Spring Break Narrative

During spring break of my fourth grade year, my family and I visited our relatives in San Francisco. It had been a crisp California spring day, and we were lounging about at my aunt and uncle’s house. Their dog decided to join us, which created it a perfect photo opportunity for my mother. I really liked the dog, who was hilariously named Tubby. We did not have a dog at home, so this was my only chance to be around them. Tubby was as big as my brother was, extremely fluffy, and caused the house to smell a bit like him. At the moment the photo was taken, I had decided to play on the Wii with my brother and cousin. It was another thing we did not have in Chicago, which made it a highly anticipated part of our visit for me.…

Being a well privileged child and fortunate enough for my parents to sometimes even spoil me, I had a very nice mp3 player in eighth grade. I had used it for over a year and was very happy to have it, until I decided to go out for a walk. I was walking with a friend and told her to wait for me as I had to use the restroom. Upon coming back from my short break, I had found out that night my mp3 player had mysteriously been misplaced. Being my usual friendly self, I thought I had just dropped it. I walked back the next day and scanned the short dry grasses for the shining silver gift I had come to think as my only escape route from stress and the world.…
