Article Title: Executive Insights on Globalization, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management
Authors Name: J. Mark Munoz
Date: 11/30/2014

In this article, the author discussed about the changes and challenges of business dynamics resulting from globalization, and provided the enhanced understanding and strategies for hospitality managers in emerging locations for success.

Firstly, the author designed a research that based on a descriptive survey conducted among 118 senior level travel executives in 35 different countries. The author collected data regarding the respondents’ perceptions on the potential impact of globalization on business, communication, accounting and finance, strategy, and individual psyche.

According to the results gathered from the research, the author pointed out to the evolving business dynamics in a globalized environment requiring strategic operational adjustments by hospitality managers, specially those located in emerging locations.

Finally, the author concluded the implications for hospitality managers in emerging locations. That includes preparing for globalization, enhancing cross-border knowledge flows, planning for financial practice modifications, speeding up business development efforts and utilizing technology strategically.

On my personal level, I like the research method the author used. The author has investigated 118 travel executives from 39 different countries, such as Australia, France, India, Japan, New Zealand, etc. The data samples are representative and persuasive. I also agree with the authors’ findings from the research that the strategic operational adjustments should be utilized for the global hospitality companies. Moreover, I think that hospitality managers should have greater awareness of the impact of globalization, so that they could take effective strategies to be successful.

Early versions of this report predicted that the world’s population would double by 2050, and population growth has proceeded almost exactly on schedule. However, even this estimate may be too low. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, most official projections underestimate both fertility and future gains in longevity. Unfortunately, the greatest fertility is found in those countries least able to support their existing people. Populations will triple in the Palestinian Territories and Niger between 2000 and 2050 and will more than double in Yemen, Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda. In contrast, populations in most developed countries are stable or declining. The United States is a prominent exception.…

For this reason numerous consultants offer innovative solutions, which are more or less ephemeral, and which generally concern the concepts’ design and atmosphere; elements which cannot provide any more a competitive edge and which have become indispensable. North American hotel restaurants show the same issue. The solutions provided by US hotel chains, such as sub-contracting to national restaurant chains or creating their own restaurant brands, are only partially applicable in Europe due to the differences in market structure and the cultural diversity of customers in European hotel restaurants. The goal of this article is not to propose specific innovative hotel restaurant concepts, each one being more extreme than the last, but rather to stimulate hotel stakeholders to analyse their own situation and reflect on their individual objectives for opening a restaurant in their hotel or continuing to operate a restaurant in their hotel but with needed modifications for their main targets. It is only then that they will be competent to evaluate their strategic choices and decide on an appropriate approach to creating value for the customers and for the company.…
