Article by Simon Williams It’s not often that doing something for the good of your business is directly in line with doing something positive for the environment, but cutting energy use fits both bills. If you can reduce the amount of energy expended in your business, costs will drop in direct proportion. There are plenty of ways to reduce energy use, of course, but here we’re particularly concerned with energy used in IT. This is a significant section of business energy use. According to government statistics, the UK service sector used around 18 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) energy in 2007, of which 15 per cent (around 1.2Mtoe) was for computing and cooling alone. Cutting back on these two energy uses - the computers themselves and the energy used to cool them - makes a direct impact on company costs. Cutting back on energy use by making things more efficient can bring secondary savings too, which may not be immediately obvious. If you can increase the energy efficiency of front and back-office computing, you may not need to increase hardware resources as quickly as you thought, which can save capital expenditure on the kit, cooling equipment and even the buildings necessary to house them. There are plenty of ways of achieving these savings, but starting in the front office, economies can often be made by careful choice of hardware and how it’s set up.
Office savings
Energy saving is not only about improving efficiencies in huge data centres, although they do account for a high proportion of overall energy use in larger companies. There are also economies to be made in any office where computers and printers are in regular use. Windows 7 can be a lot more energy-efficient than Windows XP and even Vista. Although it may need a more powerful PC to run than XP, in tests they both take about the same amount of power doing typical office work such as word processing. However, it’s when the machine’s not in use (which is most of the time for a typical

Nonetheless, saving energy not only benefits the planet, but our ‘pockets’ as well. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a simple task like replacing the light bulbs in your home can save up “75% energy of the 10% home energy costs.” Or simply unplugging electronics and appliances when not in use – a task made easier by using multiple-outlet strips, which can turn everything off with the flip of a switch – can save you money. For example, Leaving a computer on all day can cost about “21 cents per day, or about $75 per year” (U.S. Department of energy). Also, according to Goldemberg’s article “Energy for the New Millennium”, 78% of CO2 and 23% of methane is expelled from energy activities which are ultimately major contributors to indoor air pollution, urban air pollution, acidification and global…

A “green” business strives to have a positive impact on the environment and community. It develops and practices business strategies that go beyond regulation and demonstrate commitment to a healthy and sustainable future. A green business adopts principles, policies, and practices that improve the quality of life for its customers and employees. Our environmental and ethical plan not only makes us a more efficient business, it contributed a net benefit. For years, companies have wrestled with the question of whether environmentally friendly business practices created enough financial value to justify investing in them. Those questions remain for many organizations as a fragile world economy demands prudent stewardship of company currency. From a business point of view going green might not always appear to be economically efficient, but in many cases companies will have no option since government policy and subsequent legislation will compel them to follow certain lines of action. There will obviously be costs involved. Buying eco-friendly equipment, packaging and materials can be expensive. Initial costs can be higher, even if the variable costs work out cheaper in the long run. Light bulbs are a good example. Environmentally friendly bulbs can cost three times as much as conventional bulbs, but they last much longer. The initial cost can be offset by long-term savings,…
