Research Paper

On August 9th, 2014, the shooting of Michael Brown occurred in Ferguson, Missouri. Summer vacation had just begun and I traveled back to California to visit my family for the summer and as I’m sitting at the dinner table having dinner with my family the news comes on that a shooting had occur of a young man. At first I just thought it was another gang violence shooting but as I’m listening I heard he was gunned down by a police officer
There have been a lot of criticisms about the Ferguson shooting because a white police officer shot and killed an unarmed black male. The City of Ferguson and Police Department have had trouble addressing the incident that the city hired a PR firm called Common Ground Public Relations to help possibly defuse and bring clarity to an angry city. Now another criticism has aroused with the PR firm because they are said to be an “all-white” firm.
The advice I would give Mayor James Knowles is to be confident. Hiring a Public Relations firm when you as a major have a job to interact and heal your city says he’s afraid to speak out. Now that the city has hired Common Ground it has brought more criticism to city. I believe it has brought more hurt to the city than help because now people think the firm is an “all-white” firm.
As the Mayor of St. Louis you have to speak on behalf of the city. In rough situation they depend on you to make things right that’s the reason they elected you for Mayor without them you wouldn’t be where you are now. It is hard to believe in your city when the leader won’t speak out and has to have a Public Relations firm to help.

"The verdict is in. The jury has spoken. The death of Diallo, a hard working African immigrant, was adjudged a terrible accident. Not murder, not manslaughter. Louima's assailant is in jail. Two of the officers who beat King went to prison. There have been commissions, investigations, demonstrations, public reaction, prater vigils, op-ed pieces, television segments, classroom dialogues. And so Americans ricochet from event to event, speaking of reasonable doubt and prosecutorial competence and ignoring the big picture, the real thing, the most important issue in this county that we try not to talk about. That is, race."(Anna Quindlen)…

Using quotes from Governor Scott Walker, former United States Secret Service agent Dan Bongino, and news personality Megyn Kelly, all of whom jump to the conclusions about Gliniewicz death and that he was targeted because he was a law enforcement officer and that this act was sparked by the by the Black Lives Matter Movement. Governor Scott Walker went further and pointed a finger at President Obama for the “racial tensions” and a “tendency to use law enforcement as a scapegoat.” Blow went further and added a quote from Gliniewicz’s widow stating that she had not heard from the president and said, “When our officers can’t go home without being shot at, then there’s a problem” (Blow). Blow uses all of these well known individuals and their quotes as examples to “illustrate the ultimate danger of reactionary narrative-building and rabid hashtag orthodoxy” (Blow). His message is for us to stop and think before we jump to conclusions. If one can assume “that not every black life is taken with malice,” then maybe “not every police officer's life taken is the result of a hostile policing environment” (Blow). Blow clearly constructs a logical argument that makes one think about the other side of this…

It was sad to read on this subject, and I understood that Michael Brown, a black unarmed teenager was shot dead on August 9, 2014, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Therefore, many people came to protest this crime who do not believe it is fair that this happened. I also think it's not fair. The boy was unarmed and that there is not just killed this way. The official and had fired two shots and instead of taking the child to the hospital for his wounds heal and then prosecute or bring to trial. The policeman preferred to throw more bullets, he made the young life lost. Many people think this is because there is still racism, and among other things that discriminate against African Americans…

People in the community believed that Wilson may have shot Michael Brown solely because he was black. However this may be a misconception due to the fact that the majority of the Ferguson population is African-American as was Brown. Even though the majority of the Ferguson population is African-American, the same cannot be said for the Ferguson Police Department . Due to the fact that the police force is mostly white made the situation afterward worse. The black civilian community of Ferguson began to feel anger towards the police force and felt that they were unlawfully abusing and discriminating against the blacks of the community. As the investigation went on for the shooting incident, tension grew higher and higher between the police department and the civilians of…

The Detroit police department is an organization that relies on tradition. Because of this, the Detroit police department will have to resort to non-traditional means in its organization in order to fit in with the 21st century. A team effort is required for elected officials and the police department in order for this change to become effective. "History has shown that the elected officials and the police department have not worked as a team" Fisette (2002) Pg. 2 Para 1. This history has brought up a question on if the city of Detroit and elected officials can cooperate with one another in order to bring a new look on community…

Police, courts, and the judicial branch enforce laws and punish transgressors. The capability and fairness of the “justice” system, however, is not always effective. Members of the court and police men are humans with varied backgrounds and beliefs. It is difficult to have no prejudice and bias whatsoever when judging offenders of the law. A prime example of discrimination by law enforcers is the Ferguson riots in 2015. An African American teenager was shot by a Caucasian police officer. The incident led to “riots and tumults” between two diverse racial groups, which Paine identifies as nonexistent. America’s justice system works to ensure equality and unity, but the system in turn forces people to make debatable…

Many individuals believe this is a peaceful organization, who argues their point without violence. However, more often than not, Black Lives Matter protests evolve into riots which promote attacking and murdering law enforcement officers. Also, this movement has claimed responsibility for many attacks and executions of officers. Furthermore, these riots have led to mass destruction of cities. One example is Ferguson, Missouri. Here, following the death of Michael Brown, riots broke out involving fires, looting of businesses, and other violence. All of this was in the name Michael Brown, and protesting his lawful killing following his attack on an officer. Brown’s act of violence following a convenience store robbery led to his death, and it was done by his own hand. His death then led to major losses for the community, not only through the loss of a member, but through a loss of unity. Through these protests and the required law enforcement action to settle things, weeks were lost. The New Yorker hosts and article detailing the events of Michael Brown’s death, autopsy, and responding riots. Regarding police force at the riots, “Mr. Brown’s death prompted weeks of demonstrations and a response from the police that include tear gas and rubber…

Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube are just a few social media outlets that along with 24-hour news gives the opportunity for people to see what’s going on in communities all over the world. Increased media attention chronicling incidences of police brutality on unarmed blacks has increased visibility, awareness, and subsequently sparked outrage in minority communities in the United States (U.S.). The 16-year-old Spring Valley high school student dragged out of her desk and slung across a classroom by a police officer for not putting her phone away in class, Philando Castile being shot in front of his fiancé and four-year-old daughter for reaching for his wallet, Terence Crutcher shot with his hands in the air in the middle of a Oklahoma road, as well as the fatal shootings of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and Eric Garner are only a few of the countless cases, resulting in acquittal for the perpetrator, where individuals have lost their lives or have been terrorized by police over the past few years which indicates that there is a serious flaw in the judicial system.…

The leaders in our community, like the major, I have never met so I’m not sure how they treat others but I would think fair enough to have been elected to make big decisions over the town and the residents here. Another leader I have heard about was the president of the Boys and Girls club located in Champaign, IL. He was said to have been a part in a lot of community projects to better the town and the children of the town. The Boys and Girls Club is located in a lower class neighborhood and the majority of the children that attend the club are of African American decent but all races are welcome. One leader in our community that a lot of people have had a lot of disagreements with is the Chief of Police for Champaign County. In the past few years, there have been several reports on discrimination against African American teens from the Champaign Police Officers (Department). Sad to say, but a 15 year old African American was shot and killed by an officer who thought he had a gun. This brought on several hearings, protest, and community meetings but the officer was still given a “slap on the wrist.” Overall when I look back on the years I have lived…
