I use the reading material in both chapters one and two to find my selected portraits and
I feel I choose two different pieces of art but both are paintings. One symbolizes religion, while the other symbolizes the Indian Heritage. The two I choose was Figure 6 in chapter one and was painted by Jan Van Eyck known as a God Panel known as the Ghent Altarpiece, made around
1432 c,. My second one is that of the Treaty Signing at Medicine Creek Lodge, painted by
Howling Wolf between 1875- 1878. That painting is figure 43 in chapter two of the text.

I feel that the artist portrayed all four roles of and artist . The first one being he helped us see the world the way that Howling Wolf seen the world and nature even though they as a people where going through such great trials with imprisonment they still seen the beauty.
The second role is that Howling Wolf created visual record of the trials the Indian people faced but still seen beauty in the nature and their village. Role three was of course portrayed by the way the way he painted the village but also the women and the land itself and that is beauty .
I also found that he as a Indian people took pride in the women of his tribe by giving them grand headdresses which symbolized importance. The fourth one is hard to explain but I feel that Howling Wolf did not put the focus on one certain area but on the whole picture as

Sara Fanellis illustration of the ‘Wolf’ shows a very franticly drawn wolf (resembling Ed Korens scratchy cartoon creatures) (Heller, S, 2001) on a bright yellow background. He has random lines of red and black in his fur coat alongside paper cut claws and red eyes with pasted on eyebrows. He is wearing odd shoes, one an orangey red, the other a very soft turquoise. The wolf is giving a pair of red glasses to what appears to be an old woman in a blue polka dotted dress.…

The artwork I selected was The Lamentation, Figure 8.1 painted by Giotto di Bondone in 1305 in Italy. The artworks style is naturalism. Naturalism is the practice of painting things exactly as they are, the emphasis being on authenticity. The artist placed importance on the quality of “realness” in art. He observed humans and reproduced their gestures, expressions and movement in art (artble) The subjects in the painting are the followers of Christ surrounding his body after his death. Mary Magdalene is shown at Christ’s feet and Christ lies in his mother’s lap. (saylor) The subjects are in active, natural poses: leaning, holding, sitting and bending. Giotto used the fresco technique to create “The Lamentation”. (teacher.nicholas)…

The Ghent Altarpiece ,created by Hubert and Jan van Eyck, consists of many sections/shutters that have oil paintings on in the interior and the exterior. When the shutters are closed, the images on the outside use muted colors and have shading behind the characters creates an illusion that the shutters are actually a doorway you can step inside. The characters within the painting are cast a shadow that make them seem realistic. The interior of the shutters are more vibrant with saturated colors. There are more characters with God at the center, Adam and Eve at the far right and left and at the bottom, there is a group of people in a garden surrounding a fountain leading to the Lamb of God. On the left, Adam has a definite light source from…

This painting was called Skull Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill. It was created by Pieter Claesz in the year of 1628. This was actually one of the earliest pieces of his career in painting these stills. He was an artist that gave extraordinary presence to familiar things. In this painting there’s a big skull that you can’t miss in the middle of everything. This skull looks to be like 100 years old. It has one long slash on the top of its skull, like if someone came and slashed him with a knife or something. The front of its face looks smashed up and caved in. The brown on it makes it seem interesting. It gives the skull a nice ageing look as if it’s been around for hundreds of years. Unlike any other skulls though this one has an overturned glass on the side of its face. Looks as if someone forced it in there. And if you look closely you can see the reflection the glass from the skull. You could also see the reflection of a window. See the frame and everything. This skull is laying on what looks like a journal. It has to be a journal cause there’s a feather pen. Those pages on the journal look ridiculously old. There is one of those old lamps that were used back in the day. Those that lit up with fire and not electricity. Your able to see distinguish between the lights versus dark in the painting. If you squint you can see some kind of writing on the right side of the painting. Can’t really see what it says though.…

Wolves are legendary because of their spine-tingling howl, which they use to communicate. A lone wolf howls to attract the attention of his pack, while communal howls may send territorial messages from one pack to another. Some howls are confrontational. Much like barking domestic dogs, wolves may simply begin howling because a nearby wolf has already begun.…
