ART/101

Shelly Scott-Harmon

I was undoubtedly surprised at the difference and similarities between my first thoughts on the piece and my thoughts after reading about it. When I was first looked at Hung Liu’s Painting Three Fujins the figures looked very solemn, serious, and balanced. The piece seemed to have both a controlled and abstract feel about it. Most of the figures contain a lot of detail but with the drips going through them it made them look a little softer and gave it an organic feeling. It seemed to have a very controlled but almost sad feeling throughout the piece. After reading about the painting some of my first thoughts about the painting were explained. Since these are women stuck in their position it explained why I got a sad feeling from the piece. These women had requirements and certain obligations they had to fulfill. So, the figures being in very controlled and posed positions makes you feel the life they led. I liked how the artist used the linseed oil to make the abstract drips throughout the piece. The reasoning behind this gives the piece a totally different feeling. Since she sees using the drip method as adding a liberating or freeing feeling to the piece. Not only does it add both these things to the piece but she feels both those feelings herself when she is doing the dipping technique. I think that after reading the inspiration for the piece, artist techniques, and the feelings it made this a little less sad for me and helped me to notice more of the symbolism incorporated into the piece.

I chose to analyze a sculpture from the classical era “The laocoon Group.” Looking at the pictures of the sculpture I can’ help but be drawn into all the small details of each piece of the sculpture. They went into grave detail to make sure every aspect of the sculpture was as detailed as it could be to almost bring it to life. The characters muscles and tone are outlined and use shadows to show how big and masculine their build is. The stance of each individual piece makes me feel like at any moment the sculpture could take a breath and come to life before my eyes. They also look like they are in a struggle or are trying to protect someone from some sort of danger. The flow of the hair on the sculptures makes it look life like and that it would be soft to the touch. All three characters are bound together with a very thick heavy to the looks rope. The rope to me says that they are together no matter what form of battle they pursue. In this sculpture the most interesting piece of it…

The first art work chosen was a figure by Myron of Athens, Discobolous. The Discobolous, a Discus Thrower, is a Roman marble copy after a bronze original of 450 BCE. A picture of this piece is shown below, figure 1. This piece of art work is simply amazing and exemplifies the Greek sense of harmony and balance (Petronius, 2008). The artist depicted the statutes of that time, a male nude figure, which seems to express freedom of movement and the Greeks idea of beauty. Furthermore, this artwork exemplifies the role of the artist through a representation of human strength and values.…

What makes a piece of art art? Is it the creation itself or is it a combination of elements that make a piece a good piece of art. Artist use elements to add depth and meaning to the pieces they create. Artist such as Vincent Van Gogh, Sol LeWitt, Diego Velazquez, and Edward Hopper all had pieces that they used different forms to help capture the attention of the viewer and express their true meaning with the techniques they used in their portraits.…

Combining the exhibition with the class, I learned that most artworks have in common that these works are not only conveyed aesthetic appearances, but also meaningful desires behind. The Chinese arts are favored using zoomorphic such as dragon, snakes, and tiger, and other figure symbols to indicate certain meanings throughout. For example, the piece, Blue and White Dish with Three Friends Design, made in the early Ming dynasty. The “Three Friends” are pine, bamboo and the plum blossom tree. According to the caption:…

Picasso’s artistic phrase of the piece is during the years 1901-1904, during his Blue Period, which began after a close friend of Picasso committed suicide in Paris. Throughout those years Picasso, began painting many canvases portraying the miseries of the poor, the ill, and those cast out from society. For my art observation I went to preschool. I observed a Jr. Kindergarten class that consisted of 12 students between the ages of 4 and 5. It was a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday class. The day that I observed the students and teachers sometimes (as well as the whole school) were a little distracted, because it was picture day. So after the students took their pictures they did their art activity so that they wouldn't have to stop and they wouldn't get dirty for the picture. Overall, the art activity was enjoyed by both teacher and student and was developmentally appropriate.…

    Introduction to Art

The purpose of this essay is to analyze the painting of Masaccio, Expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. Masaccio of the early fourteenth century attempted to observe carefully and to record the variety of his visual experience in a logical and clear manner. Masaccio faced the problem of arranging figures in a mathematically defined space without making the picture appear to be artificially constructed, and thus isolating them from the composition or even sacrificing them to the ideal proportions of the room. Masaccio solved the problem by placing the traditional portraits of his patrons, the figures of God the Father remains unclear, thus softening to some extent the rigors of the mathematical perspective.…

    Philosophy of Art

The etymology of the word Art is derived from an Ndo-European root AR, which means ‘to join’, ‘fit’ or ‘put together’. The preliminary definition; art is the application of practical skill [techne] to the production of works of creative imagination, which expresses, or rather embody an interpretation or view of life. In a wider sense, any human activity could be considered as an art. However there are fine arts as well as useful arts. Useful arts are engaged for the sake an ulterior purpose. For example: the art of building, cooking and digging. The fine arts, on the other hand, are engaged in for their own sake. This is not primarily for the sake of their usefulness but also contain a symbolic element, and have a meaning beyond the physical reality involved. For example, “to be a good liar you need to have a perfect memory”.…

    Mixed Media Art

Several pieces ranging from sculpture, mix media and physical objects, all the collections of two artists Bergstedt and Ritter, both very well known artists in the San Francisco area came to Merced College art gallery on February 20, 2013. Both artists show there visual characteristics that define their artistic style. At first glance the room reminded me of a childlike setting where everything is just spread across the room instead of being carefully organized. The imagery of these works is cartoonish, childlike, simple and one dimensional. As one walks into the gallery, it feels like one enters a funhouse filled with colorful and whimsical wall sculptures. “More things to do” and “Following the Tread “, were among the favorites of visual art work that I admired. Ritter’s ability to portray the dynamic relationships she has with her family relationships: parents and children, and members of her own family, drew me to her art work. She was able to show through her vintage brownie dress a turbulent yet inspirational personal life that included having to do daily household chorus that a child of her era was intended and expected to do by telling a story of her family through hand embroidery. I viewed the long orange tie demonstrated a vigorous working young girl, whose work was never and still needs to be done like a long an endless tapestry of her life. Looking at the maternity piece hanging in the corner of the room was truly my most favorite piece, I couldn’t help but take my eyes off of the picture and felt her sense of how much she loved her son. She explained to me that the Dr. told her that back in those days it was not good for the baby to sleep with you in your bed, and how she was portraying the anguish and guilt of not having her son close to her during those times. To me this piece lets me see her pieces through her eyes and takes me to a more spiritual and memorable time in her life. All of her sculptures…

“Ring!” I immediately rose from my chair at the lunch table and started hustling out the cafeteria doors to my next class, art. That was the class I looked forward to everyday. Creating art and observing art is my way to escape ordinary life at school. While I paint, I become completely absorbed into my inner world and able to express my thoughts and feelings on paper. However, before the class begins to create artwork, the art teacher assigns us a task and certain technique to practice in our art. Today, the teacher assigned us to include perspective into our drawings.…
