Arsenic is a white metalloid solid element widely distributed in the nature and present at an average concentration of 2 mg/kg. To form organic and inorganic compounds, arsenic can combine with other elements. Compare with organic arsenic compounds, Inorganic arsenic compounds are thought to be more toxic. Arsenic occurs in crystalline, powder, amorphous or vitreous forms in all rock, soil, water and air. Industrial processes such as smelting, mining, and coal-fired power plants all contribute to the presence of arsenic in air, water and…

The primary function of the heart is to transport blood throughout the body, which delivers oxygen, nutrients and chemicals to the cells of the body to ensure their survival and proper function and to remove the cellular wastes. For the body to achieve this, it must maintain a certain blood pressure within the body to overcome gravity and orthostatic changes. If the body did not keep a certain pressure, distal cells and organs would not be able to receive a constant blood supply and cause a homeostatic imbalance. This experiment will show the possible changes in blood pressure due to gravity and orthostatic changes, but first, what is blood pressure and why is it important?…
Kwame Anthony Appiah, author of "The case for contamination" focuses on three main interrelated issues throw out his essay. Globalization, cultural diversity, and ethical consideration. Religion plays two major roles within this issues, claims made by people in favor of globalization and those against it. Religion can be used positively to protect culture in the idea of globalization, in the same way it can be a double-edge sword when relating to the role it plays in the issues at hand. Religion is a great way for individuals to keep in touch with their traditions as the process of globalization gets larger. Sipho is…
During the summer of 1965, a University of Florida assistant football coach set up a meeting with the university physicians. Most of his players were playing poorly as a result of the heat. Coach wanted them to try and figure out why so many of his players were being affected by heat and heat related illnesses and in result were suffering from dehydration. The doctors soon realized that two key factors were to blame for causing the Gator players to overheat--the fluids and electrolytes lost through sweat were not being replaced, and the large amounts of carbohydrates the players were using for energy were not being replenished. After working in the lab the doctors finally created a carbohydrate-electrolyte beverage that kept the players hydrated and energized to play while in the heat. Hence, the year "GATORade" was born.…
In Imperial Rome a form of Arsenic was used as a poison. Congratulations, you have been promoted to the position as "Official Food-Taster" to the Emperor, the second such appointment this week!! Why do you think that Arsenic has been a favorite with poisoners over the centuries?…
After completing this experiment I found that the hotter the temperature in a reaction the enzyme will speed up the reaction quickly and that if the enzyme suspension is too high it breaks down the toxin slowly. In Activity 7.1, Effects of Enzyme Concentration the oxygen gas released varied among the three trials with increasing amounts of enzyme. In the first few seconds of the reaction the twenty drops of enzyme reactions dropped rapidly than slightly increased over the span of 180 seconds. The enzyme reaction with 5 drops of enzyme suspension started off having the most oxygen gas release at 17.91% oxygen gas and slowly and gradually decreasing finishing off with 17.74% oxygen gas. Lastly with the 10 drops of enzyme suspension starting wit…
Arsenic damages any life forms it has contaminated. Most animals, fish, bacteria, and birds will die when they come into contact with arsenic. Plants cannot properly photosynthesize.…
I am reading, “The Chemist”, By Stephanie Meyer. It is about a character named Alex, who is an Ex-Agent for the top-secret government program dealing with terrorism. Alex had been approached in hiding by her former agency who needed her help with one of the most dangerous men in the world, who withheld a super-flu to extinct all human population. Within the novel, there are many diverse characters that can identify with pieces of music. Often times, music can be relatable in that people put their feelings into the text.…
Before the time the superhero’s group came along, Applevillage experience the Dark Age. Gangsters, known as The Suburbs, ruled the Dark Age. The Suburbs consisted of three nasty villains: Stan LEES, DePECTIcon, and HEMoss. These three forces of evil worked together to corrupt and sabotage all the apples in Applevillage, the only food and drink source as far as the eye can see. Two young villagers, Luna and Juan, needed to survive of off these nasty apples, and apple juice so unfiltered, it shouldn’t even be called apple juice.…
From this course, I have learned a lot about arsenic than I thought I would. I never knew about the diseases that arsenic can cause and how much of it is in and affects our dietary consumption, especially within food regulations worldwide. Most importantly, this class has made me become more aware of what I put in my body, concerning the amount of arsenic goes into my body. Throughout the semester, I primarily learned through the OWL assignments, the lectures, and doing some readings on my own time regarding some of the math used in class. Compared to other courses I have taken at UMass Amherst, this course is a lot of work due to the amount of assignments to complete on a weekly basis.…
This standard is issued under the fixed designation D2972; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.…
The Hollow Cathode Lamp (HCL) is a selective/specific light source made from the element of interest. The HCL contains an inert gas which is usually Argon or Neon. Ionization of the inert gas takes place, which causes acceleration of the gas into the Cathode. This causes the metal atoms (Al) of the cathode to sputter into the gas phase. The collision of sputtered atoms with the Argon atoms or electrons, excite the metal to higher energy levels. It is the process of decay that occurs which causes excited electrons to emit light in their return down to lower energy levels which is shone through the sample in the Graphite tube.…
