Army Leadership
A leader is big not by power, but by its ability to empower others. The main responsibility of a leader is developing others to do the work. Leadership is one of the issues that, to the present, is widely treated and studied, especially when it comes to the naturalized behavior of good leaders, and the structure and characteristics of the organizations in which they work and develop. As well, it has to do with the human factor within the company or organization. There are plenty of concepts of leadership, but nevertheless is still a complicated study, because it requires great knowledge in the subject in order to be able to discover an efficient leader, the qualities that may have, the differentiation of the leadership with other very similar …show more content…
The compromise and the confidence of the employees deposit on their leaders are key determinants when it comes on how the organizations runs.
Now then, how the concept of leadership plays in the US Army? Leadership for the US Army is “influencing people by providing purpose motivation, and direction while operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.” U.S. Army Leader (App. A- Leader Attributes and Core Leader Competencies; A-1). According to Army FM 6-22 “Army Leadership: Competent, Confidents, and Agile”, a leader has to have three basic goals: to lead others, to develop the organization and its individual members, and to accomplish the mission. In order to Army leaders meet these goals, the Leadership Requirements Model outlines the attributes and competencies that every single one of them must have. “Attributes describe the leaders that the Army wants. Attributes describe how an individual behaves and learns within an environment. The leader attributes are character, presence, and intellect.” Army FM 6-22 Army Leadership: Competent, Confidents, and Agile (P 1-5, PA 1-30). Leading is all about reaching others, and influencing them to take initiative. As a leader you have the function of transmitting a global and integrated vision, show confidence to the group, and guide and mobilize people to complete the objectives. You also have to encourage and maintain the interest of the group despite the obstacles and crisis that can be found throughout the work. The leader should use the full potential of its staff and distribute the work equally. In other to have success as a leader, a good work environment needs to be establish. Developing a good environment can be achieve by promoting the open dialogue and a solid communication. Once a good work environment is established, developing soldiers and future leaders is the next point in the list. By developing other –supporting their professional and personal growth- the leaders are setting up the organization for success in a long run; «Leaders will create leaders, who in a future will create even more leaders». If the leader understands his role and manages to make the work-place a good space where the soldiers can communicate with their peers and other leaders, achieving or fulfilling the end state should be an easy

    There are several key points that one must mention when discussing leadership. The first of these is respect, both the subordinate respecting the leader, and the leader showing respect to the subordinates as well. Especially in the army, we all know that the regulations of the army require that we show respect in our words and actions at all times to our leaders. Thus we do what we are told to do because we are required to. However, I find that true leadership is in effect when the subordinates do what is asked of them because they respect the leader, not just because they have to. This is because the subordinate knows that their leader has their best interests at heart, and will always strive to do what will benefit them the most. This inspires a level of performance and devotion that allows the optimal relationship between leader and subordinate. Also, it is likewise vital that the leader always treat their subordinates with respect. The leader must keep in mind that his subordinates thoughts and feelings are important o the success of the team, and must endeavor to create a work environment that allows for their input. A soldier will always work better for a leader who makes them feel that what they do and say matters, and that the leader will listen to the soldier when they have something to say. Another thing that is vital to leadership is providing for the needs of your subordinates. As a leader, it is of the utmost importance to know your soldiers well, so that you will know when something is wrong with them, or when they need help with something. A soldier may not always feel comfortable talking about any issues they are having, so it is important that the leader recognize when a soldier is acting different from normal so that they may approach the soldier and help them through whatever issue they are having.
