Yes, indeed throughout history, Rome ultimately exhibited a readiness to adapt its military tactics and strategy to successfully confront particular challenges. The Roman military was a highly organized institution. There was a straightforward system of rank, and a number of different splitting up of the basic unit. The entire basis of Roman infantry tactics was the idea that by keeping troops in arranges, one could fight more successfully. Most military commanders of the day simply had their troops rush passionately at the enemy, relying on better numbers, better soldiers, or luck to hold the day. The Romans realized that they could not always rely on these, so they turned to strategy. Each situation was wrapped up differently, taking into account land, the type and strength of the opponent's troops, and the type and strength of the Roman's troops. The Romans also thought that the best tactic would be the one that had the most effect without exposing the troops to unnecessary risk. One of them was to cut off their opponent from his resources. Armies run on their stomachs and equipment, and both require regular supplies. Without a stable supply of food and water, an army will starve or dehydrate killing or uncomforting the troops and they would fall apart. The Roman Soldiers would attack the resources themselves. When they conquered territory, they took as much as they could. This not only gave them more food, it prevented it from falling into their opponent's hands and they would also try to cut off the transportation so the amount of supplies that could reach the enemy was severely reduced. One of the most famous tactics that the Romans used was called “siege”. Siege was a military operation in which troops surround a place and cut off all outside access to force surrender. The Romans would typically build a wall around the existing city to help control the enemy. This wall would be built to prevent the enemy from escaping. The ongoing siege would eventually…

I believe that Air Force Memorial Located Arlington Virginia Is the most incredible memorial ever made because of how strongly it shows towards the men and women that were killed in combat. Simple in design, Freed's monument includes three curved stainless steel spires that stretch about 270 feet (82 meter) into the air. Meant to evoke the image of the precision "bomb burst" maneuver performed by the United States Air Force Thunderbird Demonstration Team, the three graceful spires are also designed to represent the U.S. Air Force's command of the skies. The spires sit upon a granite Air Force "star", a symbol found on every U.S.A.F. plane. Other parts of the memorial include a "Runway to Glory" and a bronze Honor Guard statue by Zenos Frudakis. There's also a Glass Contemplation Wall that honors fallen airmen, and two granite inscription walls, one situated at either end of the lawn. Attractive bluestone patios join the Honor Guard and the Contemplation Wall. The construction of the memorial began in September 2004 and finished seven months later. The official dedication was held in 2006 under presence of the then current president George W Bush, who himself previously served as an F-102 pilot, together with around 30.000 people in the audience. Why the Air Force Memorial was built was to honor all 54,000 of the men and women that have died in the Air force from combat. The reason behind why this memorial should be made in 1992, when the newly acknowledged Air Force Memorial Foundation suggested that a memorial in honor of the Air Force personnel should be built the plans were authorized by the current president, Bill Clinton, in 1994 and a site for the memorial was chosen. The chosen site was however not the site where it stands today. Instead, the memorial was planned northeast of the Arlington National Cemetery, close to the Iwo Jima Memorial.…

As the Army transitions from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the organization is well served to take a long look in the mirror. After ten plus years of deployments, our combat tested warriors are sure to possess more than enough valuable knowledge to reinforce and improve upon our status as a profession. A TRADOC published paper explains “to be a professional is to understand, embrace, and competently practice the expertise of the profession.” I believe the profession of arms exists and there are many components that reinforce this argument. Among these components, initial entry training and institutional learning, shared values, and a monopoly on our mission are three of the most important tenants. All Soldiers must graduate from Basic Combat Training and all officers must graduate from a commissioning source. Similar to medical school or law school in other traditional professions, these schools set the foundation for years of practice that will lead to expert work. From the first day in these schools, Soldiers are taught the seven Army values and the Soldiers creed. Comparable to the Hippocratic Oath, these words set basic principles all Soldiers must live by. Last, no other organization has the knowledge, material, or will to ensure national defense and security. The Army’s unique and expert work ensures it is a profession in the truest sense of the word.…

The perspectives I have of Latin America were developed over 18 years of immersion as a local. Social awareness, familiarity of speech, understanding of issues that matter in the region vs. issues important outside of the region are second nature to me. I was born and raised in Colombia, and finished high school in Panama. The political environment of Colombia and Panama shaped my cultural awareness and political understanding of these two countries’ overall climate as well as neighboring countries in the region. My understanding of Latin America is complemented by 23 years in the United States, including 21 years of service as a Marine. The Marine Corps has a culture all its own, which I understand well through 7 years of enlisted and 14 years of commissioned service.…
