Arm Wrestling with my Father
English 111
17 September 2013

Journal 5: “Arm Wrestling with My Father” Brad Manning always lost the arm wrestling matches against his father when he was young. Their communication was mainly physical. His father never showed up at his musical concerts, helped him with school work, or wrote him letters or cards, but he always critical of him at his sporting events. His dad showed the love for his son through hand-shakes and pats on the back instead of hugs. The word love was never spoken between them.
As Brad grew older and more mature, he realized that his father was not as strong as he once was. The competition between them wasn’t there as much either. Once, during an exam break, he came home and arm wrestled again with his dad. During the match, when Brad realized he was about to beat his father, he learned that their relationship was changing. Brad wanted things to stay the same as when he was small; however, as things happen, he was growing, his father was getting older, and time couldn’t stand still.
At the end of the story as he goes back to college his father hugs him. Brad realized that his father was using this as a totally different way of saying, “I love you.”
I feel like this story was written about my dad and me. Identical to their relationship, my dad and I have a physical relationship. We wrestle, play basketball, fish, hunt, and hang out together. He was the one who taught me how to ride a bike, to shoot a gun, to drive a car. My dad says “I love you” on occasion, but usually, only if I say it first. Unlike Brad though, my dad has always been supportive in whatever I have done, even if it isn’t sports related. He comes to my guitar concerts and my church plays. Whatever I’m doing, I can count on him to be there.
I love my dad and even though I didn’t always feel his love, I now know that his love is just as strong as my mother’s, but it’s just different. I also know that our relationship will one day change as Brad and his father’s

Dad In paragraph 3 when Manning says his fathers, “words were physical” he means that he and his father rarely communicated with words. During the time he and his dad were arm wrestling to him that was their way of communicating. During Manning’s trip home he and his father each learned that they both are not the same people they use to be, each and developed and changed. Manning realizes that his father is getting old and is much weaker. Manning’s dad learned that his son has grown into a man and is much stronger then he use to be. In the last paragraph when says. “If his dad challenged him to a rematch he would feel more challenged than loved”, doesn’t necessarily mean that he felt unloved by his dad. Manning knew that he and his dad had a different relationship and that his dad had a different way of expressing his feeling. I believe that Manning that might not have always felt tons of love and they may have even been times when he felt neglected by his dad, but I’m sure he knew that there was love in his dad’s heart for him. I believe that Manning’s purpose in writing this essay is to express to his readers that type of relationship that he and his dad shared. He could also be writing this essay in order to entertain but I think that his purpose is much greater than that. For whatever reason he wrote this essay he express how he and his dad’s relationship developed over…

The feeling of regret can weigh a person?s emotions beyond normalcy. As the story unfolds and the plane arrives in Chicago from San Francisco, Bohdan becomes immediately unsocial from an expected level. ?We stood apart, unlike the other soldiers and their families who were hugging and crying on each other?s shoulders in a euphoric delirium,? said Bohdan?s dad. Mentioned briefly in the beginning of the story was the fact that Bohdan?s dad was also in a war and had never spoken of it to anyone. As little words are exchanged, Bohdan?s dad finds himself wondering why his son has not told him any details of his journey. This is a realism that the father has had before in his own experiences. Zabytko then begins to tell the father?s story of regret in a lengthy description, including all of his war efforts. When regret is established one tends to dwell on that incident searching for a resolution.…

Some say there is nothing stronger than a bond between a father and his son. The trying and heartwarming relationship between the father and his son is shown in the story “Powder” by Tobias Wolff. There are many differences and similarities between the father and his son, maybe a few more differences than similarities but that doesn’t stop them from spending time with each other.…

My dad and I have a really good relationship, but we just like everyone else, have a few negative effects from our similarities. We have the same ideas and beliefs when we talk to each other, but sometimes we get opinionated when talking to other people. When you have someone that you're really close to and share many characteristics it’s wonderful, but our similarities are going to change.…

Jake resents the fact that he is so isolated but doesn't want to take the initiative to change his lifestyle. He resents how neglectful he has been of his daughter, Bernice, and resentful that he has never been able to live up to his father's expectations as a child. When Jake brings Bernice along to finally meet her grandfather, she is effortlessly accepted by him. Jake has always tried so hard to be accepted by his father, but all of his attempts had either gone unnoticed like how "the old man hadn't been around when [he was awarded with a] certificate [in Red Cross life-saving]", or when they had failed. He "[has] always resented that about [his father]; his attitude [towards his frailness]". His father had been somewhat understanding, so he showed it through his polite smiles. The emptiness of those smiles had hurt Jake through the years, stripping…

On January 11th my dad came home around 9 o’clock from work & it was his birthday & he & I spent time together in my room listening to some old school classic music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, & 90’s. People like The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Alan Parsons Project, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Phil Collins, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Metallica, Toto, Alice Cooper, Van Halen, & Cat Stevens. We were in my room listening to these great artists just talking about music for 3 to 4 hours on his birthday. But there was one song in particular a country song actually by Cat Stevens called “Father & Son” yes I know the typical father son bonding cliché but it was different this time. Him & I we’re really opening up to each other because we don’t remember the last time we even had a good conversation before his birthday due to his job & me with school, you know the typical crap people go through. But anyway when he played that song he & I were starting to tear up a little bit only from the right side of our eyes because, if you cry on your left first that means your sad, in pain, etc.. But if you cry out of your right eye that means you cry out of joy. He told me that the day he & my mom have to leave is the day I’m on my own, that I have to be ready for anyone or anything that comes at me so I can overcome it & achieve & earn success because success in life comes when you simply refuse to give up, with goals so strong that obstacles, failure, and loss only act as motivation. That night is one moment I’ll never forget for as long as I live because moments like he & I had will stay with me for as long as I live man because my dad is not just a parent but a best friend that I will always value because me & him are one in the same that I have a tighter bond with than anyone else in my family.…

A Father's Enduring Love The people that get to know us best, from our virtues to flaws, are our parents. They have the greatest influence on our lives because they are the people we see the most and have known for the longest period of time. They sacrifice many luxuries in order to give their children the best life possible. My father has had a huge impact on my life and it is because of him that I am the person I am today. A lot of people say that I am a lot like my dad, both physically and mentally. We both have the same mannerism, facial expressions, and thinking processes. We love to study and travel, eat exotic and luxurious food, spend time with family members and we both have an incredible amount of energy. From observing my dad's behavior and listening to his lectures, he has had a great influence on my life, choices and personality.…

I almost backed down when I was with my dad and brother in the car. He was dropping us off to school and I remember this like it was yesterday; I remember him telling us “well guys you know this is the last time I will be giving you guys a ride to school.” My brother said “why papi?” He replied “me and your mom are getting divorced so I won’t be living with you guys anymore. Papi and mami don’t love each other anymore so I want you guys to know that I love you so much.” My brother said “no papi don’t leave us, I love you, I don’t want you to go.” At that moment I couldn’t help but to burst out in tears and tell him “papi I don’t want to go to school I want to spend the day with you, I don’t want you to leave.” All he could say was “I have to, I love you guys so much though.”…

Like father, like son. A father and his son are meant to be alike in a lot of ways. Anyone who knows my dad can see some similar traits in myself. However, we were very different growing up as teenagers. The major differences were our home life, the types of school’s we attended, and our dreams on playing sports in the future. Although we had different lives growing up, we still have similar values.…

My father is sort of a large built man standing around 5’10. I’m hesitating to call him fat because he is muscular but he does have a large round belly. He is mostly bald the little hair he does have is gray and he sort of walks like a penguin. He tells me when I was younger he would rock me to sleep on his belly. He is the kind of person that is interesting to listen. His voice is calming and soothing. Every time that I need to hear e an honest opinion, I always go with my father, because he gives me his opinion from the bottom of his heart. At other times when he wants to tell me something that his good or bad, he waits the perfect moment to tell me, it is usually somewhere where that is calm and relaxed. My dad always tries to give me his advice. Sometimes it might appear as I don’t listen or care but when he gives me some advice, it is very important and dear to me. He gives me the support that everyone needs, when my…
