Giving Birth Control to Teenagers
The matter of teenage contraception is a hotly contended matter in contemporary societies the world over. The controversy pits proponents of pragmatism who argue for the addressing of an undeniable reality of teenage sexual activeness and exponents of teenage contraception who hold that the provisions of contraception methods to teenagers will only fuel their risky and premature sexual activity. The object of the paper is to highlight unethicalness of the decision by the government organs to gag the program aimed at the provision of contraception methods for teenager as a feasible method towards the addressing of the predicament of escalating teenage pregnancies.
Graham A (2002) cites that conception rate in girls aged between 13 and 16 is about 1 percent and approximately a half of the pregnancies are terminated. The scholar further presents that in overall 1/3 of all teenage pregnancies are terminated. There is overwhelming evidence from research conducted pointing to the need to administer contraception methods of teenagers. Reality is that at the stage at which most of teenagers start engaging in sexual activity they are far less likely to use contraception. At this stage it goes with out say that effective means to reduce the prevalence of teenage pregnancy is possible when an open and tolerant as well as pragmatic approach to the reality of teenage sexuality is executed. The approach has proved effective in reducing teenage pregnancy where it has been implemented in tandem with programs of sex education and confidential contraception
