During his lecture at Mississippi State, “Withdrawing from Vietnam: How America Left a Long [And Lost] War,” Dr. Gregory Daddis provided an interesting viewpoint of the United States Campaign in Vietnam. Dr. Daddis thesis states that the dysfunctional relationship between military commanders in Vietnam and stateside leadership, was due largely in part to the unascertainable demands of the President back home, and the failure of United States politicians to understand the capabilities of the military overseas.…
One very heartfelt reason Kerry believed the US should withdrawal from Vietnam was the war crimes committed by the US Air Force and their allies. Kerry intended to publicize through what was called the "Winter Soldier Investigation." He felt as though the crimes they were committing were jeopardizing the well-being of the country. A second distinct reason would be their findings in Vietnam. The soldiers found that it was more of a corruption based civil war and that the Vietnamese did not know anything of democracy and communism and sided with whichever military force was present.…
The war had left Vietnam in ruins, the state of both the north and the south were miserable and almost uninhabitable. Those who chose to stay in the country where…
In the chapter “ Bao, Tuyen, and Phi Pham- Vietnam” from From Every End of This Earth, Roberts (2009) explains Saigon in 1975 was falling to the communists. Bao wanted to escape to another country after Vietnam War, but Bao had to choose between love and freedom. He chose to stay with Tuyen, and she refused to leave her family because they were not married. Bao is an officer in the South Vietnamese Army, and he did not want to enter in army. Therefore, he entered in Vietnamese Army, and he faced difficult positions. After leaving the Army, they tried again to escape of Vietnam. Moreover, in this time they succeed to escape to Thailand, and they stayed in a refugee camp. Than they went to America with their children, and they made good…
There are many misconceptions about the anti-war movement, one being that it was the reason the Vietnam war ended. On the contrary, the movement was more social and cultural than it was political. As a single organization it had little impact, but as a whole movement, it was able to influence on a broader level the politics in America. Even the Johnson and Nixon administration insisted they would ignore the anti-war efforts yet still, they adapted their policies to those who dissented.(456) Those in opposition to the anti-war wave tried with great effort to discredit the movement.…
With a husband in the Army and currently on his third deployment to Iraq, I am often asked how I think this war is different from past wars. In order to answer this question properly, I found that I needed to do a little bit of research and acquaint myself with some war history. As I learned about previous wars that Americans have been involved in, I learned that only two wars have had a great deal of controversy. The Vietnam War and the Iraq War, while almost identical are vastly different in their own right. In this paper, I will discuss the similarities and differences between two of our most recent wars.…
In chapters 3 and 4 of Robert McMahon’s Major Problems in the History of the Vietnam War, there are a number of reasons given for the increased American involvement in Vietnam from the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. McMahon includes several documents in these chapters that point to three main reasons used to justify our role in Vietnam.…
The book, The Latehomecomer, is a fascinating story about a Hmong family and their struggle to get out of Laos and come to America as refugees. The Hmong people are a very proud people and they do not want to forget their culture. One can clearly see that the Hmong people hold close their identity and do not want to conform to the Vietnamese way. They take pride in their culture, their society, and the way they view how government should run. Hmong people did not agree with the Vietnamese communist government and were willing to join forces and help the United States as much as possible so that they could fight for what they believed in. Even though most of the young men and boys that fought in the war died in battle or were tortured and killed after the war they still wanted to fight for their way of life and for the Hmong people. The family’s journey to the United States was not an easy one and once the family arrived here they faced much adversary as well.…
The justification of whether or not America should have fought in the Vietnam war has been unclear for many decades. There are many different opinions that say, we should of fought for Vietnam to be free, we should of remained neutral, but the United States government threw their support behind the French so they could maintain their colonial empire. America did this out of their fear of communism spreading to South Vietnam and to stop the spreading worldwide. Although the Vietnam War and the decisions that happened occurred more than half a century ago, it is still questionable on if our decision was wise. If Vietnam got independence, it would be better for both Vietnam and other countries. They would give Vietnam the same freedom that they were given in 1781 and succeed from Frances power and be able to have a government they were proud of and wanted.…
The Vietnam war is an incredibly controversial topic; some say America won, while others say that they lost. In this case, America took a major loss, they were never winning at any point. The reason the Americans officially lost the war is because they were unable to achieve their goal which was to stop the spread of communism in Vietnam. In fact, the exact opposite happened, after the American forces left South Vietnam in January of 1975, communism immediately overran it. Along with the reasoning behind why the Americans lost are 3 points which will give a deeper explanation on why the U.S lost the Vietnam war. First of all the Americans lost because the North Vietnamese wanted to win more than they did. Following this is the American’s bombing strategies that proved to be horrendously ineffective because they were choosing to bomb locations that would end up giving them no real advantage. Thirdly, and quite possibly the biggest reason that lost America the war was their attempt to fight a war of Attrition against the North Vietnamese strategy of Guerilla warfare…
"Johnson had miscalculated: Even the richest and most powerful nation in the world could not do it all" (Turbulent Years: The 60s 36). Lyndon B. Johnson is a president torn to pieces by war. He glows in the passage of bills benefiting American society. He is someone who has suffered through an entire generation of rebellious teens. What impact did Johnson 's foreign policies concerning Vietnam War have on American society?…
I would have to admit that humans are selfish creatures in general. My reasoning is that in the most intense of situations, most humans will choose to save themselves over anyone else. For example, during the Vietnam War many Americans were unable to fully sympathize with the South Vietnamese and constantly called for the withdrawal of American troops until that request was fulfilled. While I understand the outcry to stop the number of American deaths in Vietnam, I also sympathize with South Vietnamese were under the threat of being overtaken and forced into communism or even genocide. The selfishness of Americans during this time was obvious. The American people pleaded for the President to pull out of Vietnam while knowing the fate of the…
People believe that there is no benefit to war. Others believe that there is benefits to war. War is necessary and beneficial for many reasons, those reasons are; to maintain alliances, to make new allies, and to provide jobs.…
