Arguments for and against take-home examination
The last two decades have witnessed important transformation of learner assessment. How to evaluate student capability is a great concern to educators, schools and even parents. It is believed that take-home examinations serve as a method of assessment since the results of these exams can indicate student’s ability fairly. This essay will look at the argument for and against the given issue.
To begin with, I do not think that students should be allowed to take an examination at home, for one things, this is an inaccurate assessment because when taking an examination home, students can look up many sources from the Internet, in the notes to assist them fulfill the exam. The way they deal with the examination is not a good indication of their ability which is evaluated by employing their own knowledge transmitted from the teacher to solve the problem in the allotted time. For another thing, take-home examinations may inhibit students’ capability from working independently; they neither control themselves well nor manage time effectively. When these skills cannot be trained, students find it hard to compete in the modern working environment.
However, take-examinations have been employed by many educational institutions because they believe in the benefits which are brought to them. In my own point of view how can we judge it as a fair indication of the learner’s ability when we are not sure whether students themselves do the test or they have it done. Nowadays there are many academic services growing as mushrooms. Students can hire someone to work on their assignments even theses. These services may be weakening learners’ real ability.
To sum up, take-home examinations can be considered as a replacement method in the evaluation process. In my opinion, I do not agree on examinations taken home, relying on the reasons mentioned above.
