Arguments Against GMO Research
GMO stands for “genetically modified organism”. Through genetic engineering an organism is able to have its DNA altered or modified to create a GMO. For example, tomatoes have been genetically modified by receiving antifreeze genes from a fish called winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) to resist frost during extremely cold temperatures (Science, 2017). GMOs are a very controversial topic as some people are against it and believe man is trying to play “God” and interfere with nature while others are for it and believe that if we’re provided with the opportunity to ‘better’ a product or circumstance we should make use of it. Both arguments are valid as GMOs present us with both advantages and disadvantages in society today.
