Argumentative Essay: The Value Of Lying
Fifty-two percent of people in the U.S. think lying is unacceptable, yet 65 percent of people in America believe lying is ok. I firmly believe lying is not acceptable in our society. Lying is unacceptable as it is morally wrong. For example, Truthfulness are statements which cannot be avoided is the duty of a duty of a person to everyone, however bad the disadvantage.(Kant, 4) The people have a duty to not lie no matter the reason, like to protect people from emotional pain. Kant believes that there are no excuses for lying, except I believe lying is ok to protect someone from death. In addition, “a lie, even if it does not wrong any individual, always harms mankind individually.”(Bok,4) Lying hurts the morality of mankind because it makes …show more content…
For example, “lying is stressful and hurts relationships,” says Brad Blanton, psychotherapist.(5) When you lie, not only do you make your stress build up, you could cut ties with people you do not want lose. Lying has powerful negative effects on the liar and the receiver. In addition, “The worst thing I could do now is to have her find out about the lies I told as a kid; she would never trust me again,” says Sabrina, an 18 year old freshman at Harold Washington.(8) If you lie a lot and tell someone you constantly lie to them, they will not trust you. Usually, the person you lie to the most is someone who has a certain significance in your life. Lying hurts relationships with trust issues. Telling a difficult truth is better than to resort to easily lie. Some people would disagree with me because they believe lying is ok. In the AP-Ipsos polls, 65 percent said it was ok to lie to protect someone’s feelings. These people don’t think of the after effect of lying. When people find out you lie, they don’t know if they could trust you. Thus, telling a lie could hurt more then when to tell the truth. Not only does telling the truth help your trust issues with others, you won’t regret hurting someone from the truth than telling a

Most of the time it is easier to tell a lie than it is to tell the truth and there is no way that we will ever completely eliminate lying from our society, because it does make our lives so much easier. Sometimes though lying can come with consequences, and it can backfire when someone discovers that you lied. Lying can cause a situation to become worse than it would have been if the truth had been told. Take James Frey for an example. He wrote an autobiography called A Million Little Pieces and the book was featured on Oprah and put on her book club list. After a while it was discovered that parts of his autobiography were not real and he was humiliated on a national level. If he had told the truth then his book could have still been published, but as a fictional story, and he could have still been a successful author and had a bestselling book. You should always be careful with the lies you tell and who you tell them to because there’s always a chance that someone will find out and then you would be in trouble.…

The debate over the acceptability of lying is a complicated one. Some feel that it is morally wrong and only ever worsens a situation. Others feel that it is acceptable in cases where feelings could be hurt, or if a person’s self-esteem may be lowered. However, there are instances in which lying happens simply to avoid the consequences of a person’s actions, and most would agree that it is morally wrong. Instead of going back and forth between “lying is wrong” and “lying is okay sometimes,” a better use of our time would be learning to improve our honesty with ourselves and with the people around…

Lying destroys trust amongst people and results in lost prestige. When trust is lost, it is difficult to earn it back because we tend to assume that a person who has lied once will lie to us again. We then start to put our defences up against that person in order not to be deceived once again. Not only that, sometimes, we also tend to bear a grudge for long periods of time and it takes a while before the person who lied is forgiven, that is, if we ever choose to forgive and forget. The…

There are many different reasons why people lie. There are also different types of lies. People tell small “white lies” maybe to stop embarrassment or to not hurt someone’s feelings. First off let me start of by saying that we lie. We all do. We exaggerate, we leave out things, we avoid confrontation, we try to be inconsideration of other people feelings, we conveniently forget some aspects of the truth and even keep secrets. Like most people, I find myself in situations of small falsehoods and still think of my self of an honest person. Sure I lie, but it’s not really bothering anyone or anything.…

In the article “Brad Blanton: Honestly Tell the Truth” he says that telling the truth can keep a relationship based on reality while also saying that lying keeps people locked their own mind. He states that. “‘ Many people think think they tell the truth, but they don’t because they withhold information. Have the courage to be honest and have a relationship with others based on reality’” (5). If people did not lie then they know that their relationships with friends are based off of facts and not manipulated information. However most relationships are not perfect and some relations might even end if everyone did not withdraw information to one another. The article also says that, “‘But it’s just as likely that you’ll end up losing people whom you don’t want around you anyway’” (15). But if people be honest to each other, they might lose people that they actually want in their lives. Being honest is good but if one is honest they are very likely to offend people and lose friendships in the end. In conclusion, Blanton says that telling the truth can help a relationship with a friend as well as saying that lying keeps people locked in their own minds however relationships can never be perfect and if people were honest they might lose their…

Lies have powerful effects on all of us based on the lecture “The Truth about Lying” by Judith Viorst. At an early age, I found out that lies could change our opinion about the people that lie to us and their credibility. It is not necessary to lie since if we feel that the truth might hurt the other person, a polite silence should suffice.…
