It was on the twenty-eighth of April, 1996 when a fellow Aussie, Martin Bryant went on a killing spree in the former prison colony and tourist draw in Tasmania. Bryant killed thirty-five masses and injured twenty-three. This has since been knowns as the Port Arthur massacre. It is also this case in which caused the gun laws in Australia to modify. Since the stricter gun laws have been enforced there has been a decrease in the amount of firearm related deaths. In 1996, the deaths caused by firearms were at a high five hundred and sixteen. In 1998, three hundred and twelve and in 2011 there was only one hundred and eighty-eight.
