Argumentative Essay: Should The Confederate Be Banned?

The Confederacy was established in 1860, after South Carolina first seceded from the union, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. This was one of the reasons that started the Civil War in America. The Confederacy had the same laws as the Union, however, the Union was much more industrialized, while the Confederacy still relied on farms and slave labor (Confederacy). This led to the common thought that the Confederacy is racist, which caused hatred for the Confederate Flag. Most argue the Confederate flag is a symbol for slavery and should be banned, however, not only are the reasons for banning it wrong, this also violates the first amendment, freedom of speech. The Confederate flag is a symbol of the Confederacy, which was not what most people thought it was. Most think the Confederate States seceded because they wanted to keep slaves, but that was not entirely the case.

If we ban the Confederate flag for slavery, then American flag should be banned as well. The flag people think of when they think of the Confederate flag was not the actual confederate flag, because it was the Confederate Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. The official flag was adopted on March 4, 1865. It was the battle flag in the top left corner on a white flag, with a thick red stripe on the right side, unable to visual it as a flag of surrender (Confederate Flag). However, the Civil War ended on April 2, 1865, so the real Confederate flag got little use (Confederate States of America). So when one accuses the flag of being racist, they’re pointing their finger on the wrong
