Argumentative Essay: Should Students Have Homework?
Students should not have homework because it can cause stress, depression, and may affect a child’s grades. Having the added pressure of completing homework every night is quite daunting for most children. As a result, children tend to fight or argue about having to do this overwhelming task. Also, some children who spend hours completing homework may feel like it doesn’t help him or her academically. However, homework can cause conflicts between parents and children because the way the curriculum is taught these days, most parents do not know how to do the work or not sure how to help their child. Some children who suffer from ADD, ADHD, or other mental issues is most likely to have homework resistance because they do not have the …show more content…
With the common core standard it’s not only difficult for students but teachers too. For instance, teachers have to make sure their week is planned and their lesson is to standard with what is being taught. Therefore, teachers should not have to worry about assigning homework or having to worry about which student did their homework and which student did not. Teachers have a difficult job especially making sure each student understands the curriculum. Not to mention, teachers do not get to spend a lot of time with their families due to all the work and stress they go through just to prepare for instructing. In addition to homework, not only can children get stressed and depressed, but parents can too. If a child is inundated with too much homework their life balance can be thrown out of proportion as well as the parents too. Often to make matters worse, teachers will give students homework that is time consuming, which may lead the child to be non-productive. Therefore, being non-productive and not completing all their work, can lead to lower grades and not to mention, the hassle and frustration to go along with it. Also, students not doing well on homework can reflect poorly on the

Homework has always been given to students to reinforce what they learn in school, and essentially help students learn the material better. However, too much homework is not helpful at all, and can be a source of anxiety and stress, both of which are mentally unhealthy for kids. For example, a student in high school gets home from an away game late and is exhausted. However he/she still has to complete and review the daily homework assignments: Algebra 2: 20 problems show all work, Anatomy: do work sheet front and back also quiz tomorrow, and History: answer review question for chapters 8-10 on separate paper. As a result he/she is going to have a long night and quite possibly get very little sleep, which in fact, lack of sleep impairs one’s ability to give complete attention. Too much homework results in time taken away from student’s sleep, family time, and can limit participation in outside of school activities such as sports or other academic activity’s. The amount of homework students can receive from teachers should be limited due to the great deal of stress homework causes, the time which is required to complete the homework, and the impact which it can have on students sleep and health.…

Homework has been around for as long as there have been tax paying schools. The first person to create homework was Robert Nevilis from Italy in 1905 (Roberto). Over the years that homework has been around, people have gotten different impressions and opinions on the topic. Most students believe it is way too much and unnecessary. Teachers believe that homework is very useful and beneficial for the students. While other faculty members believe it is a waste of time. Teachers and students are not the only ones with mixed emotions on this topic (NEA). Parents can also relate. Homework should be reduced because it can interfere with family time and cause tension, it can cause health problems and…

Moreover, homework isn't only wasting the student's time but the teachers time as well. By marking and grading homework, teachers are wasting their time. So teachers, please don't blame us the we wasted your time. Some people assume that homework is useful for teachers to watch student's progress but I firmly believe that homework is sent home to test the parents, not the children. I think that teachers can watch the student's progress in school better because teachers don't know that at home who did the homework, the parent, the student or the internet (Google)??????? People also think that homework helps parents to understand that the school holds high goals for students. But, I consider that school work is harder than homework and that means that parents can understand that the school holds higher goals than they think. Furthermore, homework becomes terrible if no one can help you. If no one can help you then you are doing work that you don’t understand, and if you don’t understand it what’s the point having the work that you can’t even do. I really, strongly believe that more kids would stay in school and have a better learning experience if they did not have the stress of homework.…

How are they supposed to complete hours worth of homework, as well as complete other activities that they are committed to? And on top of that, the student is expected to have at least 8 hours of sleep per day. Homework is preventing students from leading an active lifestyle, which therefore is harmful to their bodies. According to Stats Canada, about 72% of parents found that homework was often a source of household stress (Survey of Canadian Attitudes toward Learning). That is due to the fact that students are put under great pressure from teachers and parents. Unnecessary assignments could raise the stress level of the student, which can potentially lower productivity and performance, rather than raise it. Distress, which is stress that continues without relief, can lead to symptoms such as headaches, migraines, and high blood…

“More parents are fighting back against the homework status quo in an attempt to reclaim family time” (Kalish). With the excessive amount of homework given throughout all high school grades, (9-12) most students aged from 13-18 would agree that homework has increased more than the average they have ever had their past years. Even I would agree so. “Too much homework is actually sapping our children's strength, natural curiosity, and love of learning” (Kalish). The longer the hours are spent on homework, the less time children’s and teens get to spend with their parents and the rest of their families. The less time spent with families means that bonds begin to fall apart. “Practicing dozens of homework problems incorrectly cements the wrong method into his brain” (Kalish). Teachers give out so many lessons in class; sometimes students can’t process all the information at once. If teachers slowed down the pace of their lessons, explained in depth…

Did you ever think that the pressure from too much homework can cause health problems such as anxiety, and uneasy sleeping? Or that homework fuels the cheating epidemic? Well it does. Homework was originally meant to be a review of what was learned earlier that day in class. But, now at days students are coming home with more and more unnecessary busy work. Some of the down sides of too much homework is that it destroys family life and social structure, because it keeps the child in their room for hours working. Also, the stress of too much after school work can really take a toll on student’s mental health. Nevertheless, homework can be useful. It teaches necessary life lessons such as responsibility and time management. For these reasons, I strongly believe that if students are given an appropriate amount of useful work to take home, homework can be very beneficial.…

Kids get too much homework every night, and never have any time to do it. We go to school seven hours, five days a week, and don’t have time for anything but homework. Teachers seem to think that kids have all the time in the world to sit down and do all their homework, but in reality, we have lives too. Yes, schools should get rid of homework because it takes time away that we should be spending with family, extracurricular activities and may cause sleep deprivation and stress.…

Homework, we all hate it, it went from being just 3 or 4 questions to 15 to 20 questions. Homework has historically been given to students to help them remember what they learn at school, and ultimately to help them learn the material better. However, too much homework is not good, and can be bad for the student. Too much time spent on completing homework can take away from a kid’s social life, family time, and limits participation in sports or other activities. Homework

As a student, I know how much work homework can be sometimes and how exhausting that it can be. That is why I think the first reason that giving homework should be forbidden is because homework is too much work for the kids to do and teachers to grade. First, it's too much work because you may get stuck on some of the problems, and you won't get a lot of help at home. Most parents do not understand and/or remember the level of work that you do and won't be able to help you figure it out. My older brother still has to ask for help sometimes from my dad but even he can't figure out what the answer is. Next, homework can be very confusing. Sometimes there might be a few problems you don't understand. You might even try again and again but no matter how hard you try, it is worded so strangely or there was a typo that throws the entire problem off. This stresses out the students who have to get the answer because if they don't they will get HPR. If you can't get the answer, you're not benefiting from the homework. Finally, sometimes there is just too much homework to ever comprehend with. Some kids go home start their homework and spend lots of time laboring over it. I can connect with them because it gets hard having homework in up to six subjects! I will never understand how the school systems don't see how it's too much work.…

To begin with, homework is taking way family time and fun time from students. Because students get a lot of homework they no longer have time to spend time with their family or have their own free time. For instance, in the article titled “5 Reasons Why Homework is Bad for Your Child,” the author states, “Children need time to spend with their family, catch up with friends and attend extracurricular activities so they can refresh their minds and bodies.” The reasons that are stated in the article specifically, are examples of how homework takes away family time. School is supposed to only take up to 6 hours but with homework it no longer take 6 hours of school work but more. Therefore, students don’t have enough time to do there own things.…
