Argumentative Essay: Should Men Play Field Hockey?
Being pushed to the ground and completely dominated by the opposite sex in a so-called “all women’s sport” is not fun. Men believe that it is fair to play field hockey on women’s teams because if not it goes against the whole “everyone being equal” our society has put amongst us today. The number of men playing field hockey on women’s teams is increasing: “In the 2009-10 school year, according to a survey by the National Federation of State High School Associations, 308 boys were on girls teams compared with 174 the year before” (USA Today). Men should not play field hockey because it’s not a fair game and is dangerous. There are plenty of other male sports, like ice hockey, in which they can interact in. I have had first-hand experience playing against men in high school and it gave me a strong opposition to men playing field hockey.

Men are better at some things and women are better at other things. Men should not play field hockey because men and women have a different skill sets in power, speed, stamina and skill. Strength can be defined in a number of ways. Men tend to have better upper body strength than women which is the key to being a good field hockey player. The differences in strength, is men have more total muscle mass than females. “Gross measures of upper body strength suggest an average 40-50% difference between the sexes, compared to a 30% difference in lower body strength” (Gender Differences in Endurance Performance and Training). People who see it as a dangerous element are against men playing field hockey but others also say that if they don’t let men play on women’s teams then it could be seen as discrimination. It is not a fair game when men are playing on a women’s team. Reasons for this is men have a different level of competition; have more power and more aggression. Men

One of the key points to evaluate here is the argument that males biologically have an advantage in the majority of sports. In the vast number of cases this is true, however this should not be a reason why females are either discriminated against or feel pressurised to not participate in a sport. In a study done by McArdle, Katch & Katch in 1981, it was shown that among Western adults, men are around 50 percent stronger than women1. One thing that is important to point out here is that the average female has not been encouraged to participate in activities that would develop the growth and potential of muscles in the same way men have been encouraged to do. The stereotype that women should be slender and with little muscle does not aid this particular viewpoint on women’s sport. This leads on to the point of the history of female sport and the view on women’s roles in society. The earlier you go back in history, the more the viewpoint has existed that women are there to aid the husband in the house and bring up the children whilst he is out earning the money. This was very much the case and still is in some cultures, which inhibited and inhibits women from participating in sport because they simply do not have the time for it. As Spears (1978) said in his study, “Only the exceptional woman was involved in sport”2. I think it is fair to say however, that this viewpoint is quite clearly changing because participation in female sport is at an all time high at the moment. According to…

If you had two teams with the best men and women on each team it would be a great game and people would love it. In fact, if this happened ticket sales would go through the roof and sports would become more popular than they are today. “Sexually-segregated teams perpetuate the belief that female athletes don’t play as well as males”, according to Laura Pappano coauthor of “Playing With the Boys: Why Separate Is Not Equal.” This shows that it doesn’t mean that boys and girls are equal if the boys are playing on boy teams and the girls are playing on girl teams. If professional sports were co-ed it would make for more exciting games.…

Although some people believe that girls should not play boys sports it may actually argued that we should. In the first place boys just don't want to hit girls that hard. Most likely if they are willing to hit then hit because they think they are much tougher than girls but we can prove that we can play as good as them. Girls should be able to have a choice to play boy sports.…

First of all, by being able to compete in a sport not typically offered for females, allows a girl to showcase her talent for said sport. Sometimes, girls are not able to perform at their highest potential when they are participating in a sport they do not have the talent or motivation to play. However, if said girl has the talent and liking for a sport majorly for boys, and she is given the opportunity to play on a male team, she will be able to truly throw herself into the sport and showcase her talent. Some may argue that although the girl would be happy playing on a boys’ team, the boys may not be as comfortable competing with a girl. However, by being less comfortable, the boys are benefiting as well by a girl on the team. A girl can force the boys to become more comfortable with the opposite gender aiding in social skills.…

It has to take incredible courage to process a challenge like losing a limb in war. Stories abound from young men and women who stepped on a mine, or were ambushed, and their vehicle blown-up. For some, the moment is frozen in time and they cannot shed it. For others, they don't remember anything before waking up in the hospital without all their parts. To take in that realization, and then go on to perform as a star athlete is to this author, unimaginable. The incredible strength and perseverance to go on with life and then for some, to further demonstrate their zeal for life in their high level of participation in sports, is mind blowing.…

As a fan of soccer I enjoy watching soccer games with my dad; it doesn’t matter if it's Futbol Liga Mexicana or UEFA EURO, we love watching soccer. We both find it exciting when we see the women’s soccer games as much as the men’s soccer games. Several of the US women’s soccer players have sued the US Soccer Federation for equal pay. I have been seeing the difference in how the women are being rewarded for their effort and winning great titles compared to the men who hasn’t been showing much effort but yet still get more paid than the women. Women involved in sports has changed a lot in the community of sports and made gender roles more into equality. Women should get the same treatment men such as more promotion, salary, sponsorships, and recognition to feel more equal. Many people thought the equality problem had been solved with the establishment of the Title IX and the Equality Act but not everyone seems to follow the rules and gender equality is still a problem present day.…

There are many aspects why female and male athletes should not compete together. Although one reason may be because of physiological differences, societal barriers also prevent female athletes from competing with males. What it means to be male or female is one of the hardest things to decipher. This is one of the more bigger struggles between masculinity and femininity. One institution that specifically targets this idea of gender differences is professional sports. Women are challenged because of these gender differences to be accepted into a male dominated institution. Female athletes are encouraged and in many cases forced to under appreciate themselves by the media because of sports. Our society tends to under appreciate women who play…
