Argumentative Essay: Should Colleges Be Free?
Imagine this, you grew up in a poor environment yet you plan to change that. When college finally comes your way you can’t go. Why? Because you can’t pay your tuition.

In the United States of America, an education after high school comes with a price. A very high price. I think college tuition should be free. For example some families do not have enough money to send their children to college. Also, without an education people will not be able to get a well-paying job. To add to this, college in America is very expensive, so students are leaving the U.S to study. Do you think college should be free?

An average student’s college tuition for their first year can range from around $3,440 to $32,410. Bernie Sanders, a candidate in the

According to an article by Zaid Jilan, a Syracuse University graduate student and freelance writer, says “Brazil, Germany, Finland, France, Norway, Slovenia, and Sweden.” Public colleges are very close to not having a tuition or remain tuition- free. Many American citizens are going to other countries to avoid having to paying thousands of dollars on a degree. A text by Ray Clancy states, “Around 819,650 American students have left the United States to study.” Why are Americans leaving their own country for school? Shouldn’t the government just take away college tuition? Bernie Sanders claims “the needs of the American economy and future we need to have the brightest people possible getting the best education possible so that we can grow the strongest economy possible.” He thinks the same as Rutherford B. Hayes; everyone needs an education. I believe the U.S would thrive off of an educated new generation. It should not let them float away.

As a result, I think college should be free. Some parents do not have enough money to send their kids to school. Also, without an education a good career isn’t an option. To add to this, some students leave America to go to a college with a friendlier price. Through my eyes, college should be free, do you think

Current students give their opinion on whether or not they believe community college should be free and a student Felipe Bezerra says. “Tuition shouldn’t be free for those who can afford it.” I agree with Mr. Bezerra because community college tuition is not very high and if students who parents can afford to pay for their college should. Since waivers already exist for students with low income families they receive the help they need. Students also receive a pell grant, for families whose income is high their kids receive less however if college tuition is free than we are simply helping the families that can afford to pay their students education save money. Since community college is basically already free for low income students, we are really only providing help to the families who are not low…

“It’s just extremely disappointing and aggravating to have paid all that money and have nothing to show for it other than debt.” proclaimed Michelle Polyakov, an English graduate from Drake University. Polyakov obviously feels that college is not worth the cost and that all someone has to show for the education is debt. College has been deemed, by some, that it is not worth the cost because of the financial loss, the future job security, and the need for “blue collar” jobs. Finances, job security, and the need for manual laborers are all major factors in the debate of college and its cost. The reason being is because not all people are meant to go to college, or their situation just isn’t ideal. College is a privilege, and not every job requires you to have a higher form of learning, but most do. By viewing the debt of a student after graduation, the job security of graduates, and the need for manual laborers, one can infer that college is not worth the cost.…

The federal government already loses over $77 billion a year on educational grants and tax breaks, meanwhile students pay about $60 billion a year to attend public colleges and universities. By the federal government simply footing the bill instead of laundering money, public two and four year institutions could be free. This plan means cutting off aid to private institutions, but they can be left to their own endowments. This revolutionary change would mean no more confusing financial aid systems and no more crushing student loans. It is in the country’s best interest to have young adults who are educated, socially mobile, and not saddled with mountains of…

People who have potential and the knowledge to go to college and make a difference won't be able to do so if they don't have the money. In Europe, some colleges and top universities are free! I personally don't believe that college should be free. Making it free would only serve to limit the value of the education while filling colleges with students that have no business/need there. College would become nothing more than a 4 year extension of high school if it were free. As things are now, society needs about 25% of the population to have a college degree for the jobs that require one and about 30% of the population has a degree. As a result, you hear from a lot of people that believe that they wasted time getting the degree because it's not serving them as an employment enhancer.…

Education is an important part of a society and in the recent years there has been a lot of controversy on the idea of adopting tuition-free post secondary education. Many European countries that lie in the confounds of a more socialist society have started implementing free, or nearly free, college education. These public colleges ran by European governments are paid for by the people of these nations through taxation. When looking at the United States, this becomes a very controversial issue. Many people argue that it is up to the individual to “better” himself or herself whereas others believe that by instilling a free post secondary education system it is benefitting the country as a whole; some even going as far as believing it is our…
