Sex Trafficking is Slavery
The deprivation of one's freedom is an appalling act that is constantly committed by individuals today. The idea that the dominance of one man can ruin a woman's life for years on end, does not bother those immersed in sex trafficking. Just imagine being trapped in an environment full of drugs, violence, and abuse. That is the daily life of a victim in this crime. Sex trafficking is defined as, "The illegal business of recruiting, harboring, transporting, obtaining, or providing a person and especially a minor for the purpose of sex" ("Sex Trafficking is . . ." 3). This is a crime concerning millions, making it difficult to abolish. Though terminating the issue will take time, therapy for victims can start immediately. The lifestyle these victims experience is traumatic, causing many negative psychological effects. One topic that is frequently discussed in early education, is slavery, which is the withdrawal of freedom from African Americans. Dating back to the 1700's, slavery existed in America. At this time, many slaves were brutally beaten, denied access to education, and had no personal freedoms. In 1865, when slavery was abolished, there were lasting emotional effects that stayed with members of the black community. Sex trafficking can be compared to slavery due to the similar mental and physical effects. Though all forms of slavery are illegal in the U.S. today, the "FBI states that in 2011 sex trafficking was the quickest growing business of organized crime, and is the third largest enterprise today" ("Sex trafficking is . . ." 2). The concept of repeating history is taking place; proven here that slavery is not over. This social issue needs greater awareness and less acceptance, before more slaves
