Argumentative Essay On Contact Sports
After watching the video “Big Hits, Broken Dreams,” it opened my eyes tremendously to the risks of playing contact sports at a young age. The debate question that I feel is the biggest question to ask is, do the risks outweigh the benefits to young people playing contact sports? I think that this is the question that most parents ask themselves when their son decides to play a sport like football. After watching the video, it showed how high schools in North Carolina prior to the death of Jaquan Weller were very uninterested in head injuries amongst middle and high school students. I started playing middle school football in 2009, and the school system made it mandatory that all parents and athletes go to a concussion seminar before every season. The point that comes up in many cases is that there has been a huge surge in the number of concussions nationwide. PhD Greg Myer, thinks that this fact is often misleading, due to increased technology and ways of identifying concussions. He brings up the point that concussions are no more frequent then 5 decades ago. The research he has gathered found that of 100 NFL players that suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, it has yet been seen to be diagnosed in kids that are involved with lower level football such as “peewee football.” Greg Myer also brings up the discussion that the effects of being a active and developing the skills of being apart a team are far more beneficial then missing out on playing sports and risking the chance of getting injured (Myer,2016). As a 10 year football player I have always made sure my safety was my number one priority when it came to playing in the games. Although I never had any suicidal thoughts or had any major head trauma I realized that the style of playing throughout my high school career was pretty ruthless. Even though the pace of the game in high school is nothing compared to the big leagues the amount of concussions that high school players are receiving are sky rocketing through the roof and is slowly starting to increase every year. This is where it all begins with concussions in high school and if you continue to play in college and get drafted into the NFL those number of concussions will only increase. Players in the NFL have said when it comes to concussions, it all starts with that very first concussion that you get in youth football. Anytime when an NFL player commits a violent illegal hit it is resulted in a…

The movie concussion was the first time of the correlation between concussions and football. As I read Nationwide Children’s article, “Concussion in sports”, allowed me to increase my knowledge. Throughout the article, the author categorized what is a concussion and how it affects players. During reading, I found that concussions are a serious issue in sports, because it can cause severe brain damage to an athlete. This is concerning because the brains is one of the most important parts of a person’s body and if effected it could change a person life forever. Furthermore, I found it upsetting that the NFL does not make the risk of playing football known. Although, I understand the NFL provides minorities with opportunities to become successful.…
