Animal Testing is not Justified Imagine being deprived of food and water, being forced to inhale toxic gasses, going through surgery without any anesthesia, or being physically restrained for long periods of time. Many animals go through this every year. According to the Humane Society International, more that 115 million animals are used worldwide for laboratory experiments almost every year and about a 100 million are just from the United States! The animals they use include mice, fish, rats, rabbits, farm animals, pigs, dogs and much more. Not only is animal testing cruel and inhumane, it doesn’t provide much information as to how certain chemicals react in the human body. Animals used in experiments are subjected to the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process. Scientists want to study the effects of inflicting pain and its cures. To do this they kill defenseless animals by carbon dioxide asphyxiation (animals are given very low oxygen amounts which leads to death),
The first one is in vitro(in glass) testing. According to Humane Society International, Scientists study cell cultures in a petri dish and this gives more relevant results because human cells can be used. The second option is Artificial Human skin(Epiderm and ThinCert). The skin is made from a sheet of human cells grown in test tubes. Technology has allowed scientists to create human cells which can be tested on as an alternative to animal testing. According to Humane Society International, for the 300 million people that suffer from asthma, only two types of treatment have become available in the last 50 years. Also, more than a thousand drugs have been produced for stroke and after continuos animal testing, only one of them have show to be helpful for humans.
