Argumentative Essay 'Hairspray'

Hairspray is an upbeat musical that is set in the 1960’s Baltimore. Teenager, Tracy Turnblad, is in love with music and dancing. Every day after school she and her best friend Penny Pingleton go home to watch their local TV dance show, The Corny Collins Show. Tracy finds out that The Corny Collins Show is holding auditions. She tries out for the spot and wins. Tracy becomes a trendsetter of fashion, fun, and dance. Tracy decides that The Corny Collins Show should change Negro Day to everyday. With the help of Penny, Seaweed, Link Larkin, and Motormouth Maybelle they make the show integrated. Many may be familiar with the newest Hairspray produced in 2007 but what many have not realized is that it originated from the first Hairspray film produced in 1988 and the Hairspray Broadway musical. The 1988 Hairspray, was directed and written by John Waters. The theater producer for the Hairspray musical was Margo Lion. Her hair set the standard for females because it was always huge and done up nicely. Michelle Pfeiffer played Velma Von Tussle in the 2007 film and Linda Hart played Velma in the Broadway musical (“Hairspray”). Harry’s hair was completely different form Hart and Pfeiffer’s hair.
