Argumentative Essay: Football Should Be Banned
Imagine playing a game of football, and you have the ball in your arms. You’re running and running. Then suddenly you get hit. You fall and immediately feel unbearable pain in your head. You black out and wake up in a hospital. A person comes in and claims that you were best friends, but you have no idea who they are. This happens to so many children and teens, because of the sport football. Kids get hit in the head, and they are never the same again. Football should be banned, because concussions are a horrible injury that can be life threatening, and injuries to the head have long term effects. The first reason why football should be banned is, injuries to the head can have long term effects. “If someone gets hit too hard in the head, they can get permanent brain damage.”(Jennifer Shotz, scholastic scope) This is important, because permanent brain damage can and will change the entire course of a person’s life. They might not ever be able to drive. Or, they might never be able to move out of their parents’ house, because of the brain damage they got as a kid from playing football. Also, “getting hit in the head can result in memory loss, aggression, dizziness, headaches, blurry vision, and other lifelong damages”.(Maureen Salamon, webmd.com) obviously, football is way too risky to play. If someone is just holding the ball in their arms for a couple of …show more content…
“No sport has more concussions than football.” This shows that playing football can threaten someone’s health, and even their life. Continuing, “One or multiple concussions could kill someone”. This is important, because no one wants to die. Dying is the last thing that someone should even have to think about their whole entire life. Not to mention, dying from making a stupid decision like to continue to play football even after having a concussion is not very smart.(Jennifer Shotz, scholastic

There are positive ends and negative ends of the whole situation that can make the game boring for the players and also the spectators. The movie concussion was the first time of the correlation between concussions and football. As I read Nationwide Children’s article, “Concussion in sports”, allowed me to increase my knowledge. Throughout the article, the author categorized what is a concussion and how it affects players. During reading, I found that concussions are a serious issue in sports, because it can cause severe brain damage to an athlete. This is concerning because the brains is one of the most important parts of a person’s body and if effected it could change a person life forever. Furthermore, I found it upsetting that the NFL does not make the risk of playing football known. Although, I understand the NFL provides minorities with opportunities to become successful.…

Doctors proved that, “Recent studies have shown that head injuries sustained by NFL players can eventually lead to debilitating, chronic brain diseases such as dementia” (“NFL Head Injuries). This is a problem because the NFL isn’t doing enough to protect their players. Yes, the players do provide entertainment for everyone, but if the NFL keeps being careless many franchise players won’t be able to play. NFL players should be better protected by the NFL so players don’t develop brain disease, and won’t have to get sidelined during games due to concussions. Doctors researched and found out that, “A total of 87 out of 91 former NFL players have tested positive for the brain disease” (“FRONTLINE”). This shows that the NFL doesn’t protect their players enough. Only 4 former NFL players out of 91 weren’t diagnosed with concussions. The NFL needs to take better care of players so this doesn’t happen as often. Although brain diseases due to concussions are a tremendous problem, one thing that is much worse than that is a player's chances of getting another concussion. Once a player suffers their first concussions they are more likely to develop a concussion. “Studies show, after the first concussion, the athlete is four times more likely to suffer another” (“Concussions in Sports”). This is very important because as players get more and more concussions. Eventually they will develop permanent brain damage or they…

Sports are an integral part of American culture. Throughout the year, friends and families will spend enormous amounts of time and money to gather together to eat, drink and cheer on their favorite teams. American football has been named the most watched sport in the nation and continues to grow in popularity. There is something about the thrill of watching your favorite team score touchdowns and win championship games that makes watching football a nationwide form of entertainment. Beyond all of the wins and losses however are the many injuries that often occur in every game. Broken arms, legs and shoulders are only minimal injuries compared to the, often over-looked, head injuries that happen more often than not. Even though there are protective measures taken to prevent concussions and other head injuries, many football players are still being hit so hard in every game that they may experience one or more concussions in a single game day.…

In a perfect world the athletes we look up to would be law abiding great citizens. They'll give back to the community, do countless hours of community service, fix our schools, parks, and anything else that's asked of them. However, this is no utopia and some of our athletes are not law abiding citizens; with a few of them having multiple run-ins with the law. Being a media crazed era, we are seeing more athletes have run-ins with the law, particularly the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, and the National Football League. When someone does do something, instantly people form their own opinion about what a proper punishment is and it seems to point too banning players. With that being said, should the National Football…

The game of football, especially at the higher levels, is becoming increasingly dangerous as athletes keep getting bigger, faster, and stronger. The rate at which concussions are occurring is alarming and player safety has become the topic of conversation in the sports community. Since the symptoms and signs of a concussion don't always appear immediately or appear to be mild at first, the sports community originally assumed that the head injuries weren't serious. Besides the risk of suffering another concussion, a growing body of research has linked sports concussions with serious long-term effects like depression and memory problems. To make matters worse, researchers documented that high school and collegiate athletes do not report concussions sustained during football play because they were not aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion. Furthermore, although the National Football League injury report has shown a decrease of head injuries since 2012, PBS Frontline's Concussion Watch project reported that one-third of all concussions sustained during that time were left off the injury report. As research continues to expose the serious nature of sports concussion, league officials are facing constant scrutiny to change the rules and regulations that govern the game of football. (Michael,…
