Argumentative Essay Abortion
Abortion has been a heavily debated political, ethical, and moral dispute continuing for more than a decade after it was legalized in the United States in January 22, 1973. This decade long debate between “pro-life” activists and “pro-choice” activists usually stem from ones ethical and moral values of whether it is right to surgically or medicinally terminate a fetus and the extremes, like death of the mother, which could occur from the pregnancy. In this debate, I would view myself as a “pro-choice” activist because I firmly believe that abortion should continue to be legal to decrease the number of unintended mothers, broken or single parent families, and family poverty. In “Abortions in America,” a study states, “…51 percent had problems with a relationship or wanted to avoid single parenthood (Waldman, Ackerman, Reed, Greenburg, Cutter, Sieder, and Lavelle)…” Henceforth, more than half of abortions occur because of relationship problems or the avoidance of single parenthood. So, if these women had their right of abortion revoked, they would have had to either leave the child in the care of the adoption system, file for welfare which may not help very much, or raise the child alone which could lead to mentally stressing both the parent and the child creating an environment unsuitable for a child to be raised. Thus, abortion should be legal to prevent this from happening more frequently in the United States and around the world. Moreover, in “Missing the Boat on Pregnancy Prevention,” it states, “almost three-fourths of births to single women began as unintended conceptions, and more than one-half of the births to formerly married women are a result of unintended conceptions (Hogue).” Therefore, to help prevent these women from having to deal with single motherhood because of unintended pregnancies, they should have the legal right to choose abortion. This is able to be seen when single motherhood can cause social strains on both the mother and the child but can also lead to family
