I am terrified of bananas. Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about the media. Popular media has spread over the past century and has evolved from being a small matter to people worshipping it. From “Wow, that guy just survived a zombie invasion!!” to “Oooo isn’t he just adorable?” popular media has affected us all. It has sparked fandoms, nerd conventions, teams, inspiration for real life events, and the many adolescent gossip girls that live today. While it may seem false, in some way shape or form, popular media is valued by everyone. Many movies help inspire the young mind of adolescence. The movie Zombieland starring Woody Harrelson (Tallahassee) and Jesse Eisenberg (Columbus) is about the most unlikely crew surviving in Zombie USA. At one point in the movie Tallahassee goes up against a zombie horde and kills them all. My younger self exclaimed “Wow, this guy is awesome.” I myself saw many movies of the likes. All inspired my imagination to take hold and depict me as a strong warrior. A humorous warrior at that. Popular media taught me humility, comedy, and strength. Women are very emotional about popular media. TV shows and certain movie genres are on a woman’s radar. TV shows are a very serious factor of a woman’s life. They gossip about it in their little “posies” and they always try to get men involved in them. Shows like the Bachelor, Giuliana and Bill, and the Bachelorette are all examples of these shows. For women, these shows give reason to be social. They talk about what has happened in the past, how it affects the future, and what is going on in the present. Women get value from this because they are getting out, being social, and possibly meeting new friends. Movies are also valuable in popular media standards. We will use men as examples this time. Men always gather for movies. Most of them don’t like those “lovey dovey” movies that women watch and crave, guys go for action or comedy movies. Movies such as Wedding Crashers,

    Lund 1 Aaron Lund Professor Dorn English 102 15 November XXXX Preserving Yellowstone’s Winter Wilderness Although a few recreational snowmobilers destroy fragile ecosystems and harass animals as they ride through the wilderness, most love and respect this country’s natural heritage. That’s why they brave the cold to explore what is left of wild America— including Yellowstone National Park. Unfortunately, however, even respectful snowmobilers are unwittingly damaging what they love. Because snowmobiles create both air and noise pollution and because their use in the park strains the already lean budget of the park service, recreational snowmobiles should be banned from Yellowstone National Park. In 2002, the Bush administration, under pressure from the snowmobile industry, proposed to reverse the National Park Service’s 2000 plan that would have phased out recreational snowmobile use in Yellowstone. In addition to reversing the earlier plan, the new policy would increase the number of snowmobiles allowed into the park per day. This policy is a step in the wrong direction. It may be hard to imagine that 1,100 snowmobiles a day (the proposed limit) could cause an air pollution problem in a park half the size of Connecticut, but in fact they can. It has also played a major role in media in positive developments such as fight against racism, fight against gender bias, and spreading awareness about world peace. Author Bill Swanson who wrote the text, “How Films Feed the Mind or When I’m Hungry, I Don’t Want to Eat Candy”, would also agree that movies play a significant role in structuring our society. In his text he explains movies have a big influence to people both physically and physiologically. Swanson states that films are only analogies of the real world that condense time into a two-hour story. Furthermore, Swanson explains movies are part of people’s memories, and many compare and reflect movies into their own personal experience. There are numerous examples in which Swanson refers to movies that are influential and momentous. One of the movies that Swanson proposes is Raging Bull, he quotes that: “Raging bull is the irrational urge to define ourselves by violent acts of control and domination” (Swanson 240).     This essay is a compare and contrast of the character’s Sula and Nel from the novel ‘‘Sula’’ by Toni Morrison. Throughout the progression of the novel, Nel and Sula complement each other in ways that allows them to form a single functional unit friendship. The symbiotic nature between Sula and Nel began during their childhood years. Sula depended upon Nel for sturdiness and comfort, while Nel preferred the unpredictable nature of her sula. They used the other's lifestyle to compensate for their shortcomings by placing themselves in the other's surroundings. When Sula visited Nel's home, Nel, who loved the oppressive neatness with dread, felt comfortable in it, with Sula. In the same way, Sula found comfort within the walls of the Wright’s home. They took solace in each other's presence. Each one found comfort in what the other finds bothersome. Sula dislikes her disheveled house, and wishes that she could live in the clean house of Nel's. Nel likes the homeliness of Sula's house. Dependent describes the friend's relationship, because they depended on each other for everything. Sula and Nel's friendship, was as intense as it was sudden. They found relief in each other's personality, because they find their comfort in each other's environment. When Sula accidentally killed the boy named Chicken Little by throwing him into a river, Nel stuck by Sula. They both took responsibility for the accident, even though Sula was the only participant. At Chicken Little's funeral, Sula and Nel held hands and knew that only the coffin would lie in the earth; the bubbly laughter would stay aboveground with them forever.
