Argumentative Essay
Shops should be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To what extent do you agree?

Do you like convenience stores opening all the time? As far as I am concerned, shops should not be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week because of the following reasons.

To begin with, opening stores 24 hours a day would severely impair people’s health. If shops have to be open around the clock, someone will have to work throughout the night. This means people would have to stay up late for work. As you know, midnight is the best time for people to take a rest. If they always have to work overnight, they may suffer from sleep disorder, which in turn leads to high blood pressure and so on. Indeed, psychologists find that people staying up late for a long time tend to have poorer mental health.

Furthermore, shops opening for 24 hours are not only a waste of energy, but also a cause of pollution. In order to attract people’s attention, these shops have a gigantic neon light, which in turn causes pollution. Over the past ten years, how often can you see stars in the sky clearly? Would you like to leave our next generation with a starless sky so that they can only watch the stars on the Internet?

Some people may claim that it would be convenient for us if shops are open all the time. Understandably, there are times when we need something urgently late at night. How nice it would be if we can get that exact thing immediately! However, we can buy most of the goods like drinks, snacks and tooth brushes the in vending machine, which is equally convenient. So, it is not worth the resources and money to have shops opening all the time.

All in all, shops should not be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Shop owners should consider the environment and workers’ interests first before making more profit.

From a retailer’s point of view, it is the best day for them to open stores. It is evident that during the last Thanksgiving holiday, most of them opened as early as 5pm. It probably sounds ridiculous. Most consumers need holiday hours; therefore, retailers’ wishes are to satisfy consumers’ desire by being opened all day long. Precisely, retailers adjust in order to meet consumers’ demands. The internet has expanded the opportunities for consumers to buy. It is clear that consumers even want to be in a position to shop when they have free time (Millard n.p.). The free time includes holidays. Therefore, it makes most retailers to gear up their sale on this day. They, thus, volunteer their…

While Israel is a Jewish state, it should not be a theocracy. Forcing private enterprises to be closed on religious holidays is not in accordance with a truly democratic state. While it is okay for religious people to not use these shops and for religious stores to be closed on Yom Tov's, this should not mean secular people need to compromise their own lifestyle. Especially in a city like Tel Aviv, that is as secular as it gets in Israel and has a very urbanized feeling to it, bringing in religious law as the law of the state should not be tolerated. Doing so would disenfranchise a large portion of people in Tel Aviv without giving them the opportunity to voice their opinion on the matter and dictate their own affairs. A decision like this should be based on what the majority of people in the area want, not a select few Orthodox men who live in Jerusalem and represent communities that are often secluded from life in Tel…

    Buy Nothing Day

Asking American consumers to boycott all goods for a day could have negative effects on the country’s economy in many ways. Consumer spending almost single handedly carries the economy and makes up almost 70% of the gross domestic product. Not only does a Buy Nothing Day day have the potential to lower the GDP, but it would also cause instability in an already fragile economy that is still recovering from a recession. On a more personal level, a Buy Nothing day could seriously affect small businesses that depend on daily sales much more than large companies and workers in sales positions. If stores knew that they would not see many customers on a Buy Nothing Day, they may ask many workers to stay home which could be harmful to people who depend on work every day to pay for their living expenses. Even if a person was luck enough to still be called into work, many salespersons are paid low, basic wages and then paid commission for the number of sales they make that day to make up for the low base earning. If no one comes into the store to buy goods that means the commission they would have earned is not available.…

I have been to different states, such as Iowa, where the roads were so bad that there were “No tow Bans” on the roads. This means that if you go in a ditch that your car has to stay there because they will not tow it out until the roads are better. In situations like this I feel that they should have to area businesses closed so that way people are not out driving. While I was in Iowa there were over 50 cars in the ditch within a 1 mile stretch. Many people could have been injured or have even been killed. Why put your life in danger or your employee’s life in danger when being closed for one day could save lives.…

Finally, according to the reading passage, megastores provide many benefits for the local economy. However, the lecturer maintains that superstores are actually bad for the economy. In particular, megastores offer low-pay jobs that nobody wants, but people have to take them because there are no other jobs since family shops have been closed. They have no option but to take the job. On top of that, superstores don’t hire them fully because they want to avoid giving benefits and creating unions. Hence, teenagers and old people work in megastores because there is no option, and they need…
