In this image Cotton has captured a surreal moment. The use of black and white exaggerates the scene and gives of a cold and dark feeling. The photo Vapour Trail 1991 was taken from a low angle shot. Taking the image from this angle allows Cotton to include the vapour trail and the clouds in the sky and environment around it. The vapour trail which runs from the top right corner to the bottom left corner give a deep depth of field, the trail has a rough, grainy texture throughout it and consists of many distorted lines. The light source is coming from the bottom right highlighting the clouds. Also included in the photograph is a line of trees and shrubs in the foreground. The foreground…

Throughout history, many artists have tried their best to capture the mood of their time period. In 1865, Albert Bierstadt created an incredible art piece named “Looking Down Yosemite Valley”, which illustrates the glorious mountain landscape of the California valley. He was so inspired by what he had seen, he decided to reimagine it by using oil on paperboard. While painting, he chose to make the skies light blue and the plantlife brighter than usual. In addition, he painted the valley mountains larger than everything else in the oil painting to emphasize the valley’s size. Bierstadt showed an unbelievable understanding of light and reflection, which brought the entire piece together. Furthermore, this inspired people to move to California to be able to experience the inspiration for Bierstadt’s artwork and have a better life.…

    B. 1) It definitely gives me a clear indication of the weather conditions. In london it was very misty/foggy, but as she slowly left london behind it started to thin out and patches of blue Rosamond Lehman uses many of the 'fabric' metaphors so we get to see how the mist looks, which is in turn, describes the mist/fog much better. "Lentil, saffron and fawn left behind." The words Lentil, saffron and fawn are all brown, orangy earthy colours describing London as she leaves it behind. London is all very built up and the the buildings are all very brown and dreary (linking back to lentil) "…but then the woollen day clarified…" , the word 'woollen' describes the mist/fog as wool which is a fabric that you cannot see through. The phrase, "… drenched indigo muslin." 'Muslin' is a very transparent type of fabric, so the mist looks very see-through . This fabric indicates a lighter colour change and lifting mist outside. "The skies amorphous material began to quilt…" The skies amorphous material are the clouds, which are beginning to thin out. The patches of blue in the sky which contrast to the white clouds are indeed like a quilt, with many patches here and there.…

Michelangelo Buonarroti and Leonardo da Vinci are two of the worlds greatest artist. In their art paintings they often exhibit the usage of detailed imagery, vivid colors and an unconventional way of creating depth and volume in their works. It is hard to compare every single piece so in this paper I am only going to focus on one piece of work from each artist. In a piece named "Virgin of the Rocks," Da Vinci creates a painting with two women and children sitting in a cave, using sfumato,"the Italian term for a painting technique which overlays translucent layers of color to create perceptions of depth, volume and form. In Italian sfumato means "smoky" and is derived from the Italian word fumo meaning 'smoke'. Leonardo da Vinci described sfumato as "without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke or beyond the focus plane."(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sfumato) in the painting to create a perception of depth in the mountains behind the virgins.…

It is also interesting how the first image of the wandering cloud contrasts sharply with the second image of the dancing daffodils. The cloud drifts in solitude slowly and placidly across the sky, whereas the daffodils hurry to and from in a lively way. This contrast seems to show that looking at the daffodils…

Lighting plays a major part in the film “The Wind...” The Irish weather has a slight affect as it is very soft, humid and cloudy. In various scenes in the film very foggy and rainy weather was evident. A very natural and soft light was seen throughout the movie as much of it was filmed outside where high tech lightening is not nessecerly a true representation of the films setting. The natural lighting was used to great effect using the particular instance of the scene where five or six members of the IRA are pictured walking slowly toward the camera out of the mist. The midst creates an eerie feeling in the air and this technique is used to great effect.…

I chose the first work of art “Prayer for Rain” because to me the artist is showing how hard times were in the 1930s and how much faith played a role in their lives. The artwork shows the dried up plains, skeletal remains of an animal, and the despair in the woman’s face. I believe James Allen used his role as an artist by using the traditional role. He did this by making a visual record of this particular family in this particular time and place. He shows how distraught this family was and how much they wanted and needed the rain.…
