GUIDELINES for the Argumentative Essay:

Using the documentary Pakistan’s Taliban Generation write an argumentative essay that addresses the following questions. Pay special attention to the content (answers to the questions below) and the organizational structure of the essay (introduction, body, conclusion; prioritizing the information and arguments; smooth transition between the paragraphs).

1. What is religious extremism? Make use of the narrative and expository writing skills to show not tell. You may refer to information and experiences other than the documentary. A girl was flogged for talking to a boy of her street by the people who claimed to be the Taliban in District Swat. Responding to ordinary things in extreme ways is extremism.

2. What is the primary cause(s) of religious extremism? How does the documentary Pakistan’s Taliban Generation help us understand the causes? Cause No 1.

3. What are the effects of religious extremism in Pakistan? (Is religious extremism dangerous to the existence of Pakistan?) Use specific examples from the documentary to illustrate the effects. Effect no. 1: Loss of economy

Effect no 5: Loss of Education because of destruction of schools

4. What is the right thing to do regarding religious extremism? Take a well thought out position based on: (a) A clear assertion about what’s to be done.
