Although it seems easy to differentiate between what is and what isn’t a sport, there are many arguments today trying to decide if certain activities should be classified as a sport or not.
The Merriam-Webster definition of a sport is “a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other”. In most cases a person would argue that for something to be considered a sport, it must take some physical ability, which according to the definition, is true. But as time goes on there are people considering activities like pro gaming as a sport, even though there is no physical activity

It’s a very complicated matter. In college it is not considered a sport. Although it takes physical skill, the cheerleaders aren’t competing against anyone so it can not be considered a sport in college. Other people might deny this because there are many cheerleading competitions out of school, which means that it would meet all the requirements to be defined as a sport. There have been many arguments over this topic, but at the end of the day cheerleading is still ruled as not a sport. Another highly talked about activity that is debated about is baseball. Baseball is a sport. It takes not only a great amount of mental skill, but also physical ability. Some people don’t consider baseball a sport because they say that it’s not physical, when in reality, baseball is one of the most physically demanding sports. Competitive cheerleading has never been called a sport according to the government. There has been an ongoing debate as to if cheerleading fits the definition of a sport which is “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature” (Dictionary.com n.d.). By that definition you could interpret it to mean cheerleading is a sport, but there is much more to being a sport than meeting a definition. Competitive cheerleading does require specialized training, extensive practices, and a dedicated team; but to become a sport there are several problems that must be addressed. There is not a consistent set of competitions, no standard set of rules, and no regulations for judging. There has also been many court debates on this subject with cheerleading always on the losing end. In order for cheerleading to become a sport these problems must be addressed. Once this is addressed then cheerleading could become an official sport and the athletes would be eligible for athletic scholarships for full tuition amounts.…

Second, the Olympic Committee was forced to forfeit a part of the definition of ‘sport’ to allow the World Chess Federation to continue to be recognized. And, finally, that the vocabulary surrounding chess is more mathematical and theatrical than it is athletic. This means that the definition of ‘sport’ should be changed to encompass all activities that are given its title, to avoid this kind of long-term debate. To begin it would seem logical to define the words in the statement to gain better understanding of their meaning. Sport has several meanings, such as ‘one being a good sport’ by showing honesty and respect even when defeated but for the purposes of this essay sport will be defined as “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2008). Exercise is defined as “activity requiring physical effort carried out for the sake of health and fitness” yet interestingly has a second meaning that could be very relevant to the above statement; “an activity carried out for a specific purpose” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2008). Good is defined as “to be desired or approved of, and health “the state of being free from illness or injury” or a person’s mental or physical condition” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2008).…
