High School Sports

Are high school sports helpful or are they harmful to kids? There are many articles that will say that they are bad, and there are some that say they are good for kids. The article, Are High School Sports Good For Kids? talks about if they are good for kids. My reasoning is that they are good for kids because they can provide physical activity and can get them new friends.

People will say that they shouldn’t because they shouldn’t be injured at such a young age, or that they lose maturity, and that some don’t even get recognized for it. However, it does give them a chance to make friends, and there is protective gear to make sure that they don’t get hurt in any way.

Parents do not get overly worried, like they should, due to the severity of these injuries that happen to their children. In reality, the real problems are how parents encourage their children to be extremely competitive on the field and play aggressively, the amount of traumatic injuries that occur on the field, and how it is affecting the futures of young athletes. These are the reasons why youth sports are becoming too violent to be safe for children.…

One may be worried that a child may be left out by the coach or the other teammates ("Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Participation). According to Philips, children make more friends and build stronger relationships with teammates and the coaches rather than being left out (Philips 26). Injuries also play a big part in why so many people do not play sports at a young age. Actually, having this physical activity helps strengthen bones and muscles, which help make injuries happen less. People also believe that children will have too much organization because of having to listen to the coach all of the time instead of making one's own decisions and mistakes. Organization is good for younger kids because if there is no organization at all everyone will be out of control and not knowing what to do ("Pros and Cons of Youth Sports Participation"). Even though there are many things that could happen to children playing sports, there are always ways that one can do to prevent…

This fact is important because it proves, when parents put pressure on their children it does not benefit them, in fact it is actually setting them up for life in an unhealthy way. John Wooden (NCAAB Hall of Fame coach) said, “Sports do not build character. They reveal it.” High school sports are usually beneficial to all parties involved, such as the athletes, parents and the schools that have the athletic programs. The athletes that play high school sports learn countless lessons on life, how to be healthy with exercise, and the extra incentive to keep up the grade to play these sports. Parents of high school athlete’s get an opportunity to watch their child succeed at something he or she loves. Parents can also benefit financially, when their child is good enough at a sport to get offered a scholarship which may pay for all of college.
