Henry's many supporters argued for his release saying he should be permitted to sail for England. On April 17,1610 Henry set sail for the fourth time looking for the Northwest passage. He was funded by the Virginia Company. He sailed the ship Discovery under the English Flag. He sailed to North America going further north than he had before. He navigated through a perilous strait that was later named Hudson Strait, he also sailed into a large sea, now called Hudson Bay. He was convinced that a way to Asia could be found through that sea. He never found the way through. His crew began to starve and Henry did not treat them well. Finally, the crew mutinied against Henry. They put him and a few crew members in a small boat and left them adrift in the bay. Then the rest of the crew returned to England.…

Sir Francis Drake was an English navigator and explorer, born near Tavistock. He served an apprenticeship as a mariner, and in 1567 he was given his first command. His ship, the Judith, was one of a squadron of vessels led by a kinsman of Drake, the English navigator Sir John Hawkins, on a slave-trading voyage in the Gulf of Mexico. All but two ships of the expedition were lost when attacked by a Spanish squadron. In 1570 and 1571 Drake made two profitable trading voyages to the West Indies. In 1572 he commanded two vessels in a marauding expedition against Spanish ports in the Caribbean Sea. During this voyage, Drake first saw the Pacific Ocean; he captured the port of Nombre de Dios on the Isthmus of Panama and destroyed the nearby town of Portobelo. He returned to England with a cargo of Spanish silver and a reputation as a brilliant privateer.…

There were about one hundred and twenty people on board that tiny vessel consisting of men, women, and children. I am very happy to make it onto land after so long on the water in a crowded ship. The land is dense with forests, and the bodies of water that surround us are beautiful. John White has been named governor of our colony.…

Christopher Columbus made a total of four voyages in the span of twelve years, from 1492 to 1504. His voyage was not an easy one. He asked the king and queen several times for their finances to make the trip. Christopher Columbus eventually convinced them to allow him and his crew to go because he told them that he would discover a "back door" route to the riches of Asia, India and the "spice islands" - by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean instead of east. Christopher Columbus bought King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella gold, parrots, and spices to prove that he had actually found land. He also brought back with him the natives. While sailing back to Spain hundreds of natives died on Columbus ' three ships, the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. The king and queen granted him more money for his next voyage.…

(Elliot) Although, there were a good number of people willing to sail across the ocean in hopes of becoming a king or monarch of a new found land, only a few were noted as the most important. Henry Hudson was one of the famous explorers who decided to search for the Northwest Passage as it is known today. Along the way he discovered the Hudson river, the Hudson strait and Hudson bay. These waterways have significantly helped trade within North America. Hudson also has a number of bridges and cities named after him. Another bay, known today as the Chesapeake Bay, was discovered by Christopher Newport. He led the voyage all the way to Jamestown and explored the bay. (Mariners’ Museum) Once many different passageways were discovered, and there was a possibility sailing around the world could be done, Ferdinand Magellan did it. He…
