The Higher Power is God

I have had many opportunities to share the gospel this semester, but sadly only taken up one. This one chance that I took full initiative to do, was for my younger sister, Mia. My little sister is the product of a drug mother, as am I. She is almost seventeen years old and is struggling with self esteem and not understanding that she is so much more than a drug baby. When I shared the gospel with her, it was not actually planned. I was praying before my meal, and noticed her eyes were open and she had already eaten a lot. I asked her, “You didn't want to pray with us?”, her response was, “No, I believe there is a higher authority, just not necessarily God”. Immediately, I was quick to respond with , “No, sweetheart, the higher authority is in fact God”. I told her how we were all sinners, and that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and that one day we will live in eternal life with him again. She was not having it, and stayed in complete belief, that there wasn’t enough proof of this “God”. She is a straight A student athlete at a challenging charter high school, and is smart young girl. The conversation I had with her broke my heart, but at the same time kind of made me realize, that there are many unsaved, and one day I might be able to reach out to just one of them. This conversation was different from my semester conversation because now my little sister is asking me about the gospel, where as my mom is still stuck in her only belief that good works will get you to heaven. I learned so much through doing this experience, and I can only hope to keep going out and sharing this summer as I lead a middle school bible study at church.

One of my witnessing encounters was last week and it involved a clerk at a retail store. I was walking through the store to find the items I needed. I met Regina, a store clerk and I proceeded to communicate with her concerning items in the store and her day. She replied that she was having a bad week due to some unfortunate set of circumstances. I listened and we talked for a while as she restocked items in the store. She was very depressed about the way things were happening in her life. Which led me to ask Regina if she had any kind of spiritual beliefs? Regina communicated with me that she did not believe that there is a God or is not a God. Therefore, I ask Regina to read some scriptures out loud and she read Romans 3:23 and it said: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; then I asked her does this say to you. She replied that everyone has done something wrong at some point in time in his or her life. At first, she thought that no one else has made as many mistakes as she did. She was very receptive in reading and sharing her thoughts on the scriptures I asked her to read. The next scripture was Romans 6:23 it says: 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord; then I asked her what does this say to you? She responded by saying sin leads to death but, God gives me life through Jesus. I replied yes and because sin can send a person to hell. God allows us another chance through his son Jesus and he wants a relationship with each one of us.…

“Lord please save my sister’s life. Please keep her safe even in the midst of her drunkenness and drugs. Jesus please keep her alive long enough to come to you for salvation.” I have been praying this for over 30 years and still I believe for her salvation. I am comforted by the knowledge that He hears my cries and has kept her alive thus far. In fact, last week she approached me about going to church again (she hasn’t gone since she was in middle school)!…

Phillis Wheatley was a black slave, born in Africa and brought to America in 1761. She was purchased by a man named John Wheatley and given to his wife as a companion. His wife, Susannah taught Phillis how to read and write out of sympathy and soon after, the intelligent child began to learn Latin. She was surrounded by a Christian family, which influenced many of her writings. She became well known after her first poem about Reverend George Whitefield and soon after she was on her way to England to have her manuscript published. A majority of her writings praised many things, and talked about ideas like Christianity, salvation and history. One of the many writings in her first and only published book was “On Being Brought from Africa to America,” which touches on themes of race, religion, identity, and prejudice.…

Mrs. Bea was always there when I was confused about what God wanted me to do. She would always tell me to pray and listen. Looking back on that time in my life, I can now see where I never actually done what she told me. Yes, I prayed, but I never actually listened and because of that I can see where I missed great opportunities to share my faith with others. After she left, I relied heavily on Mrs. Knight to help. This past year I found out that I will not be able play softball my senior year of high school. This will be my first year since I started playing at the age of 5, that I will not be able to play the sport I love. In fact, I will be having surgery on my shoulder on my shoulder in two weeks. This has been a real difficult time for me because I have felt as if God has left me, but Mrs. Knight continues to remind me that God’s plan is bigger than anyone can ever imagine. She has also told me that God gives us these storms so that we will be able to help someone else that might be going through something similar. In fact, Mrs. Knight is helping me gather my testimony so that I can tell it to the FCS members. It is still hard for me, as the softball season gets closer, that I won’t be able to play. PART ONE – What method of evangelism did you use and how did you start the conversation? I used the Friendship method; I was drawn to that method because of the person in which I choose to witness to. My son was not my first choice, but it happen just as it was supposed to. I questioned the friendship method at first, but I came to understand friendship was just a metaphor for friends, family, stranger, and anyone else whom could fit into that category. I picked my son, because I felt he was the right person at that moment to witness to. He and I were engaged in a conversation about angel. Not the angel who are in Heaven, but the angel which there was a TV show that he and I use to love to watch once upon a time. Anyway, he was watching the DVD of the show in his room. There was a part that triggered his curiosity, so he came to ask me a question about it. I knew that was my opportunity to witness to him since he was already on the page about demons. I asked my son what if all of that was true about what was going on in the show, he said some of it is true. I asked him what part he thinks is true, he responded. The part when angel lost his soul. I asked him if angel lost his soul for real what would happen. He said they showed what would happen on the show, angel became a beast named Angelis. After that answer, I asked him, can I share something with you, he said share what? How good God is. “God is a good God; He is always there for you and me. He will give you everything your heart desire, all you have to do is ask. All he asks for in return is your love and devotion to him and only him. He said, you always ask me that. Then, I asked him do he believe Jesus died on the cross for our sins, he answered yes. Do you ever think about giving your life to the Lord? I began to tell him; remember when I told you I received Christ as my savior? It was a life changing experience for me; all kinds of…

For my role play I was a Faith-Based Social Worker that has a client base of social work professionals, clergy, and women in transition. My client was a young woman who had just found out that a friend had been out running and had been struck by a car and killed. Before the role play Thea (the client) and I decided that we would have rapport built before this session and had been seeing each other for some time. Immediately when the client entered the room I could tell that she was emotionally distraught. I could read it in her face and in her body language. I greeted her and immediately began assessing what was bothering her. As soon as she told me her news I replied with an empathetic response and shared that I was sorry for her loss. She then continued to describe that it was unfair that her friend had lost her life and asked me why God would do something like this.…
