Appropriate Play Summary
The event I attended was one of the many plays that takes place on campus in the arts building. The play I specifically attended was called Appropriate, which was originally written by playwright, Branden Jacobs Jenkins. The play was approximately 3 hours in length with an intermission included into that time. Overall, the play specifically deals with family conflict and the whole idea of race itself. All of the main characters in the play are all interconnected family members that originally are from the south. The main characters included: Toni (eldest sister who recently lost her job and is divorced, Frank (youngest brother who was a past drug used and alcoholic), and Bo (eldest brother who is a wealthy businessman). The more secondary characters in the play included: Rachel (Bo's Jewish wife), Ainsley (Bo and Rachel's youngest daughter), Cassidy (Bo and Rachel's eldest daughter, River (Frank's Fiancée), and Rhys (Toni's son) Ugly family secrets are uncovered in this play, while a family sorts through the estate of their deceased father. A grueling photo album is found during the whole cleanup process and it arises a variety of conflict. The photo album contained pictures of African Americans being lynched, abused, and dehumanized. This lead to the belief that the deceased father/grandfather of the family was a racist and possibly a part of the Klu Klux Klan at some point in time in the past. All of the siblings couldn’t grasp the fact that the album actually belonged to their father and tried …show more content…
It also made me realize how easy it was for a member to hide that they were part of the Klan from their own family and act like a total different person at home. The play itself made me feel slightly uncomfortable, due to it confronting a harsh topic that was a large part of American

The Second World War began when Germany violated international law and invaded Poland in 1939. When the war began, huge amounts of human rights were violated by the major powers. “The Table,” by Ida Fink is a play that describes the recording of statements given by multiple witnesses on behalf of a war crime that occurred. The prosecutor in charge interviewed 4 people who were present during the crime and took note of their testimony. The interview seemed more like an interrogation, since the prosecutor wanted every detail from that day. Although a work of fiction, the tales of atrocity provided by the witnesses in the play represent the magnitude of brutality the Nazis implemented on civilians.…

The play that I had decided to read was Caught by Christopher Chen. The region in which the play was written in is the United States, and was developed and performed in 2014, and was published online on February 1, 2016. Caught is episodic in nature, however, both stories in the play are considered comedic and somewhat mysterious. In summary, Caught is about two Asian American individuals who have used their appearance to deceive and manipulate many.…

It asks us to read these plays to learn about the horrors that African Americans have faced during their period of enslavement, and how freed slaves attempted to bring these atrocities to light through writing literature. It also helps us understand how theatre was used as a tool to assist in the freeing of millions of enslaved people, as well as a way to mock an entire race. It is important to search for the inspiration behind any theatrical style and determine what the motivation was in developing it into a staged production. From the extremely racist motives behind minstrel shows, to the noble cause of the slave narrative, by determining the motivation behind each theatrical movement, we can attain a more comprehensive understanding of the…

    Laramie Project

Over spring break, I went home and saw The Laramie Project at my high school. Before seeing the play, I knew a brief overview of what had happened in Laramie, Wyoming, but did not know the details. I knew that Matthew Shepard was a gay, male, college student who was brutally murdered from a hate crime. When I first got to the auditorium, I could barely find my seat because the entire place was packed with people, and I knew it had been a sold out show. In the play, the boy who acted as Matthew Shepard, was gay in real life as well. I thought that was very brave of him to volunteer to play Matthew, and it really added to the intensity of the play. It made the play more realistic, and made it seem like something that was actually happening. During the play, there were constant interviews that were conducted of people from Laramie, Wyoming, who knew Matthew personally. During these interviews, the spotlight would shine on the person who was getting interviewed. However, the interviewer who was supposed to be asking the questions was not shown, instead, the person was just telling the audience information about Matthew and what had happened. As the spotlight was on them speaking, everything else in the auditorium was pitch black. During this time, the cast ran on stage and changed the scenery to prepare for the next scene. I really liked this idea and thought it was very clever because they did not waste time closing the curtain to change scenes; instead it happened during the actual play. In addition, it was not distracting at all because all of the attention was focused on the person getting interviewed. I also really enjoyed the costumes that were chosen, all of the actors and actresses were dressed in flannels and a pair of jeans. I thought this was really fitting for the setting of the play. After seeing this play, I definitely had a much better understanding of what happened in Laramie, Wyoming.…

For my first play, I attended “The Brothers Size”, written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, at The Old Globe Theatre, on Friday February 8, 2013 at 8 pm. As I was looking online for plays to attend to, this one in particular caught my interest because of how detailed the summary was of it. It reminded me of what you would read on the back of a dvd or a book and think to yourself, “I have to see this.” or “I have to read this.” “The Brothers Size” is about the individual's…

    Wicked Play Critique

In seventh grade, I was first introduced into the theatre world by a group of my eighth grade friends singing a song I had never heard before. I did not have the time to ask them what it was called, but they told me it was from a musical called Wicked; the song in question was called “What is This Feeling?”, though at the time, all I knew was that it was about some people hating each other; back then, I’d believed it to be a love song between the Wicked Witch of the West and some unnamed male lead. I did not know anything about the musical other than it was about the Wicked Witch of the West and how she was supposedly good. This, being a novel concept to me, seemed idiotic, and I rejected the notion of such a silly musical. Since then, I had heard from numerous people that this was a great musical, and by the time I came to Parkview in 2009, I’d grown to be fed up with all of this talk of witches and scarecrows and something about gravity. I gave in, decided to try and find the soundtrack on iTunes, but, as these things go, I forgot about it almost immediately.…

The amount of racism at this time does not surprise me at all. Part of is that this was during that time that racism took place. This true story took place when black and white TV was around. Racism and the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) is still around, but not as acceptable. The college did not like being a colored school, and being called Negros. Also, another thing that happened during that time that would most likely not happen now is that while staying in a hotel the African American boy’s rooms got broken in to. Not only did they break in to the room, but they also put blood all over the walls.…

On Friday, May 6th, I saw Woodland High School's Play Production of Once Upon a Mattress. A weekend before, I had gone to see Pioneer High School's Production of The Addams Family. Let me Just say, all school “rivalry” or whatever set aside, Once Upon a Mattress was undoubtedly better. The play was about a wicked queen who didn’t want her son to marry and take her throne. One day, a dirty and uncivilized young girl claiming to be a princess, comes with interest of marrying the prince. Certain that the girl could not possibly be a princess, the queen tests their guest by placing a pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by 20 mattresses. In the morning, the guest tells her hosts that she endured a sleepless night, kept awake by…

Even though the play is pretty mild as far as age appropriateness goes younger or immature student wouldn’t be able to grasp the complexities of the protagonist, nor would they be interested enough to watch the entire play. I asked my history teacher if she thought that some of her students would sit through All the Way , because she has seen it before and she said only her advanced students because they could look past the social differences that aren’t necessarily acceptable nowadays. I remember in the 6th grade I went to see Madame Butterfly with my class, and I understood most of the themes but most of my classmates either didn’t pay attention or were too angry to see the art behind the plot. Even for myself the first time J. Edgar Hoover referred to MLK Jr as a n***** (can I put this?). I was admittedly offended until I had to remind myself that in this time period referring to african americans out their names were common, accepted, and sometimes encouraged. During this time, we, African Americans, we still sitting in the back of the bus, using separate restrooms, schools, and entrances. I know that it angered people, but I assume they were used to it because that how it has always been. I can relate to this because I find it normal when someone judges someone by the color of their skin. This doesn’t mean it’s right, but it is not surprising. But to me what was surprising was…

In the past, there were direct discrimination toward African Americans such as police brutality and racial stereotype about African Americans. Policemen stopped the marching violently when they knew that those African Americans are protesting the rights they always deserve. People produced songs with lyrics like “if you are white, you are fine; if you are black, go back, go back”, and they published cartoons that had African Americans been drew in an ugly and terrifying way. Those are the dues African Americans have to pay, and they suffered all these terrible acts of the white people in order to survive in the United States. This film uses the unavoidable facts about the discriminations African Americans suffered to emphasize the big ideas that African Americans have done a lot of effort to gain their freedom should always be memorable by the people of the world. Nobody should ever deny African Americans’ suffering because those are part of the U.S…
