The issues of social responsibility within a technology field usually fall within two areas: environmental and social, specifically labor. Somewhere there is a balance between product quotas and corporate social responsibility. Public opinion and clever communication often determines the outcome. In 2005 Apple began a supplier code, which stated Apple’s corporate stand on issues like employee workload, child labor, and proper wages. Since many of the local foreign companies who provide the manufacturing labor do not govern these issues, it becomes the responsibility of the company to provide the social restraints. Apple’s self-initiated audits report deficiencies in the supplier and demand reparations to those violations. If they are severe enough, Apple will terminate its involvement with the supplier. Apple announced that it fired one of its suppliers in the 2013 Supplier Responsibility Report when an audit revealed that the supplier had seventy-four underage worker violations (iClarified, 2013). Recently Apple increased its audits of its foreign manufacturing plants, since Apple products are mainly outsourced overseas (Torres, 2012). Now boasting a 92 percent compliance with a maximum sixty-hour workweek, Apple has bent to the public desire for a socially responsible company despite its intrinsic business production pressures (Apple, 2013).…

Apple uses five main control mechanisms situational analysis, technological situations, competition situations, environment situations, weakness, and threat analyses to manage the direction of the company. Situation analysis takes into consideration population growth, public demand for mobile communication, educational growth, positive attitude for new technology devices, literacy, illiteracy differences, acceptance of imported products, and social views from around the globe. Technological situations are looking at what technology needs are around the globe, worldwide Internet use and awareness, increasing cell phone technology, future technology needs for hospitals, colleges, universities, cities, and other institutes. Competition situations take into account that 15 major companies are competing for sales to 19,260 cell phone producers worldwide. Environmental situations involve analyzing issues with the global warming and pollution effects of packaging material and cell phone radiation. Environmental approvals must be met to operate in any state (Scribd inc., 2011).…

The use of electronic products has grown substantially over the past two decades, changing the way/speed in which people communicate, how information is attained and personal entertainment. “The 2009 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) shows that U.S. households continue to increase their use of consumer electronics, especially televisions, personal computers, and related equipment. Nearly 45% of households in 2009 had three or more televisions, an increase from less than 30% in 1997. Similarly, the majority of households had no computer in 1997; now over 76% have at least one computer” ("U.S. Household increases," 2011). With the ever-evolving electronic industry, organizations are continually marketing products that boast better and more efficient than the previous model, thus promoting consumers to replace or upgrade their existing electronic devices. In the Presidential Proclamation for America Recycles Day, November 2010, the President established an Interagency Task Force on Electronics Stewardship charging the task force with developing a national strategy for electronics stewardship (Obama, 2010). Gone are the days of observing televisions and other electronics waste (e-waste) sitting outside of dumpsters and street corners.…
