Apollo Group
The Apollo Group, Inc. was founded in 1973 by John G. Sperling with the intention of bringing formal higher education to adult students. Sperling faced many obstacles starting his endeavor from slumping markets to market criticism. John Sperling believed “that lifelong employment with a single employer would be replaced by lifelong learning and employment with a variety of employers. Lifelong learning requires an institution dedicated solely to the education of working adults.” (Apollo Group, Inc., 2004) Sperlings efforts to provide higher education would prove to be lucrative but not without technological, global, and innovation measures.

Global

The Apollo Group is largely responsible for the continuous growth seen in online learning. John G. Sperlings vision was to create a teaching environment that was ideal for adults. The environment is not like the brick and mortar traditional schools that typically appealed to 18-24 year olds. Sperlings was able to be successful with this vision, by 2003. UOP online study had 75,000 of the 200,000 students attending taking classes online.

Sperlings was head of the curve in the early 1990’s when he began to strategize his approached to online-education, which later exploded in the mid-1990s. According to estimations 13 percent of the 500,000 online students in the U.S attended the University of Phoenix Online during the early 2000s, according Pearce II and Robinson Jr. (2005) This shows how the University of Phoenix and the Apollo Group have expanded the world of online-education. The growth for the Apollo group continues daily in its partnership with the University of Phoenix, which are pulling in approximately one-third of the total revenue associated with online-education.

University of Phoenix Online has quickly grown to be most widely known online university in the United States. This is partially due to the marketing strategies of the organization as well as the affordable classes and flexible schedule.

The University of Phoenix has a large potential to expand their global footprint by offering classes in additional languages such as; Spanish, Mandarin, and other ethic dialects. By doing so the University of Phoenix will provide education to additional students who may not have had the opportunity to attend school at their local universities due to expensive tuitions, location, class times and structure, among other obstacles.

Another key strength of the Apollo Group is the degree programs offered at the University of Phoenix Online. “AGI currently offers 15 degree programs in business, education, information technology, and nursing that are accredited by The Higher Learning Commission or the regional accrediting association of the Institute for Professional Development client institutions.” (Pearce II & Robinson, Jr., 2005) Due to the national accreditation AGI is able to provide students with associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees, and financial student aid. This is largely important for adult students who do not have the conveniences of attending traditional classes and choose to attend the University of Phoenix Online.

Weaknesses that AGI will see are the public accreditation by employers and even other college professionals. The University of Phoenix has commonly been referred to as a diploma mill and degree meat market that is only concerned about making money from their students. Offering accredited courses as well as hiring some of the top professionals in the individual’s areas of study will assist UOPX to raise public expectation and recognition as one of the top performing university programs available to date.
