During 1607 Jamestown Virginia was founded, and was named after King James I. Jamestown became the “first permanent English settlement” in North America, which was something huge to achieve during those times (“The Starving Time”: John Smith Recounts the Early History of Jamestown, 1609, n.d., para. 1). During 1609-1610, a disastrous event occurred throughout Jamestown which was called the, “Starving time”. In 1607, the organizers all had visions of what they wanted to achieve for Jamestown. Visions of obtaining great wealth and letting the settlement be greatly known across North America. Though, those visions went away after the colony went into complete chaos and the colonists were left to face harsh conditions.…

He spent his adult life studying the ocean and appealing to the king Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to grant him financial support and a vessel to travel the vast seas in search of new land (Wikipedia 28). He was an explorer at heart and after many failed attempts to impress the king and queen, he was finally granted ships and the finances to discover new land in favor of Spain. He embarked on four major voyages and on his fourth voyage he set foot on the Americas (Wikipedia 29). Though he was not the first man or the first European to set foot in the Americas, he however, is considered to be the first European explorer to discover the Americas as we know and set routes for the rest of the world to follow.…

The Jamestown colony was located near present day James City County, Virginia. Jamestown was the first permanent settlement by the English in what is in current day known as the United States. The location of Jamestown was selected primarily for the fact that it provided a favorable defensive location against any other foreign powers that may have tried to gain control of the colony. John Smith, Robert Hunt along with others provided inspirational leadership for the colonists but even so starvation became a very apparent problem. The hostile relations with the local Native American people and a lack of any profitable exports only made matters worse. Despite this and a horrible winter bearing down on them, the colonists persevered. At the end of the first winter only 60 of the original 214 English colonists survived. (jamestown virginia) The settlers who came over on the initial three ships were not well-equipped for the life they found in Jamestown. In addition to the “Gentry” who was not accustomed to manual or skilled labor, they consisted mainly of English farmers who were not prepared physically or emotionally for the problems that would face them. (old and sold antique digest) Yet despite this they persevered and worked as a team to establish a colony. However, when two ships, crudely constructed in Bermuda, arrived at the settlement with no supplies, when the colonists desperately needed supplies the most, the settlers packed up and abandoned…

For a brief period during the 16th century, Virginia was the only English colony in North America. The first settlement was established in 1587 on Roanoke Island, in what is now North Carolina.(Goldenburg 1) By the 1600s, the Virginia colony comprised the entire coast of North America, including the shoreline of Acadia, and a vast area of inland Canada. In 1607, settlements were established at Jamestown and at the Popham colony, but only Jamestown survived. "By 1620, the portion of Virginia north of the 39th parallel became New England." (PBS 1) Despite the materialization of other English colonies in North America, the Virginia colony was by far the most significant in the 17th and 18th centuries in defining the country’s public and civilizing disposition leading up to the Revolutionary War.…
