People may think of fruit as a sweet, healthy option for a snack. What those people do not know is that some of those fruits can be very damaging to their teeth and to their bodies. One reason for this is that a variety of commonly digested fruits are extremely acidic. This experiment will test the pH level of everyday fruits to see how acidic they actually are. When eaten, which fruit will have the lowest pH (be the most acidic)?

Hypothesis

A sign that a fruit is acidic is a sour taste. Out of all the fruits being tested, lemon is the most sour. The common assumption is that the lemon, the most sour fruit, will be the most acidic and that the banana, the least acidic fruit, will be the most alkaline. The hypothesis of this experiment fits this assumption. If the pH of different fruits mixed with saliva are tested, then the pH levels of lemon will be the most acidic.

Background Research

pH is the “measure[ment] of [the] hydrogen ion concentration of a solution;” the more hydrogen ions, the lower the pH is (Academic

Eating alkaline foods can balance off too much acidity in a diet, which can be harmful to one’s body. The alkaline diet is trending because it is said that eating alkaline foods can increase weight loss. When someone gains weight, a body is more likely to “‘adapt’ to a buildup of excess acidity” (Bridgeford). This large amount of acidity is then stored in tissue containing fat cells, which increases body weight. Eating a lot of greens, which generally have a high pH, can cancel out this excess of acidic substances.
This topic leads into the next question of why acidic foods are harmful to teeth and to a body. Acidic substances softens and eats away at tooth enamel. Fruits that most people deem “healthy” can actually hurt their teeth (Tosuni-O’Neill). Once the white enamel is chipped away, the tooth is more sensitive and “can become discolored”

The purpose of my experiment is to find out which liquid,(orange juice, water, Coca-Cola, or Sprite), dissolves Sugar Free Life Savers the quickest.I think the Sprite will dissolve the Life Saver the quickest because it has the highest acidity, with ph levels reaching 2.4. The ph scale ranges from 0 to 14. Battery acid reaches 0 on the scale. 7 is considered neutral. Sprite has a ph level of 2.4. Coca-Cola has a ph level of 2.5. Orange juice has a ph level of 3.5. And water has a ph level of 7.0.…

As a result we found out how chemicals and HCL combine, changing the water’s pH levels. When pH levels are too high, the water is labeled as being too acidic meaning it is too hazardous to drink or touch. AST International claims that “Most of us automatically classify lemons, rhubarbs and vinegar as acidic solely because of the way they taste. We don’t realize that strawberries and tomatoes and plenty of other foods are acids too” (Tanasescu). The release of hydrogen ions is how we determine if foods are classified as acids or…

Every fruit has a sweet taste only that some are sweeter than others. The sweetness of most fruits come from its sugar content and these sugars that the fruits contain are known as invert sugars. In this experiment, an orange was used. An orange which is an excellent source of vitamin C gets its sweetness from natural sugars which are sucrose, glucose and fructose (livestrong.com). In this experiment the concentration of glucose in an orange was measured. There are various methods which can be used to measure the glucose concentration but in this experiment a highly specific enzymatic method using the GOD-PAP assay (glucose oxidase peroxidase aminophenazone phenol) (schedule coventry,2013). This assay is based on 2 coupled enzyme reactions and a colorimetric end-point.…

Introduction Acids and bases are chemicals commonly used in the lab, and, even though we may not realize it, they are also found in substances we use at home on a daily basis. To test the acidity or basicity of a substance, we can titrate each until the endpoint is reached, or use an indicator. Something as simple as litmus paper can be used, whereby blue litmus paper will turn red in the presence of an acid, and bases will turn red litmus blue. We can also use universal indicator and bromothymol blue, but in this lab, we are going to be using cabbage juice. Cabbage juice indicator is made by grinding up red cabbage to obtain the dye. When added to an acid, it will turn a light red to pink hue, while bases will turn blue, green, and even yellow. Thus, in this lab you will test ten substances for their acidity or basic content using a cabbage juice indicator. Hypothesis Make an educated guess as to which substances are acids and which are bases. Associate a pH with the acid or base.…

For my project, I had to create my own acid-base indicator and find out what happens when it is placed in an acidic solution (vinegar) and a basic solution (dissolved baking soda). I chose my indicator to be a fruit because fruits can be very effective at determining how acidic or basic a substance is. My fruit was a blueberry, but I couldn’t use raw blueberries because it’s not going to give me the best results. I had to make blueberry juice. I did this by placing several blueberries in a blender with some distilled water. I used distilled water because it doesn’t have any vitamins or minerals that could possibly interfere with my results. Then, I turned the blender on, and I got blueberry juice. I had to strain the juice to remove all the…

(non-acidic, or alkaline foods have pH values of 7.0 or greater) .They include red meats, seafood, poultry, milk, and all fresh vegetables except for most tomatoes. Most mixtures of low-acid and acid foods also have pH values above 4.6 unless their recipes include enough lemon juice, citric acid, or vinegar to make them acid foods. Acid foods have a pH of 4.6 or lower. They include fruits, pickles, sauerkraut, jams, jellies, marmalades, and fruit butters.…
