Ap Human Geography Unit 9 Study Guide
Exosphere- The outermost region of a planet's atmosphere.
Ionosphere- The layer of the earth's atmosphere that contains a high concentration of ions and free electrons and is able to reflect radio waves. It lies above the mesosphere and extends from about 50 to 600 miles (80 to 1,000 km) above the earth's surface.
Thermosphere- The region of the atmosphere above the mesosphere and below the height at which the atmosphere ceases to have the properties of a continuous medium. The thermosphere is characterized throughout by an increase in temperature with height.
Mesosphere- The region of the earth's atmosphere above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere, between about 30 and 50 miles (50 and 80 km) in altitude. Stratosphere- The layer of the earth's atmosphere above the troposphere, extending to about 50 km above the earth's surface (the lower boundary of the mesosphere).

Cirrocumulus- Cloud forming a broken layer of small fleecy clouds at high altitude, usually 16,500–45,000 feet (5–13 km), typically with a rippled or granulated appearance (as in a mackerel sky).

Cirrus- Cloud forming wispy filamentous tufted streaks (“mare's tails”) at high altitude, usually 16,500–45,000 feet (5–13 km). Altostratus- Cloud forming a continuous uniform layer that resembles stratus but occurs at medium altitude, usually 6,500–23,000 feet (2–7 km).
Cirrostratus- Cloud forming a thin, more or less uniform, semi translucent layer at high altitude, usually 16,500–45,000 feet (5–13

At the top of the picture, in the background, there are clouds. Underneath the clouds there is a mountain range that has some very light lines on it. In front of the mountains, there is a large grassy area with rocks on the far left and right sides of the picture. From halfway down the picture, to the bottom, there are more clouds. There is a small circular grassy island in the center. Just above this island, there is a deciduous tree with its roots exposed floating in the air. In the clouds at the bottom, there is a long oval with pointy ends with 12 smaller ovals lined up horizontally inside it.…

The base of stratus clouds is generally below 6,000 feet (2,000 m). They are quite uniform in appearance and lack any type of ambition to develop into a proper storm. The worst they have ever done to rain on someone's parade is dust a sprinkling of snow. But they are hazardous to Visual Flight Rule (VFR) pilots because of widespread decreased visibility, and have been behind several notable cases of vestibular disorientation. Pilots can easily become confused when the normal cues for up and down are difficult to see, and may develop vertigo. Or they may miss another plane flying at the same altitude altogether. Anything that results in reduced visibility can be dangerous, so stratus makes the list for in-flight hazards.…
