Before there was fire roasted marshmallows, the only way things were heated was by the heat of the sun. There once was two little kids that were playing on their small, family farm. Nancy was seven; she loved playing Hide and Seek. Davey was four; he loved playing Kingdom. Their father was in his mid thirties. He typically spent over ten hours in the field each day; however, he still had to bring in over three-fourths of the crops, and in less than two weeks, it was going to get too cold for the horses to work in the field, so for the past week he had spent about eighteen hours out in the fields. Their momma was in charge of all of the housework. She made all of the meals and taught the kids. Since it was getting colder, it took longer to cook the meals; so, she hoped that her husband would be done on the field soon so he could help her with more of the housework. One day, Davey begged and begged for someone to play kingdom. He loved to be a knight that rode his nice pet dragon, who saved the princess stuck in the castle. His sister promised that she would play with him if he played Hide and Seek with her. So, Davey played game after game with Nancey. After every game, Davey would ask if it was her turn to play with him and every time she would say, “One more game”. Davey soon got tired of playing with Nancey, so after Nancey went and …show more content…

My hospital bed was ice cold and the bleak and empty white walls depressed me as the uncomforting thought that I would have to stay here for maybe another week brought tears to my eyes. The usual and oppressive smell of disinfectant lingered in the room as I recalled that night in my head, trying to convince myself it wasn’t my fault, as I had done everyday since the accident. It was the day everything changed and my life was turned upside down. Forever.…

The story “The Lamp at Noon” takes place in a dried up, unfertile desert. Dust storms are causing health problems for the family. The setting is crucial to create the dark and sad atmosphere of the story because it was all about the fact that there is something wrong with the place that it dried out their farm which caused them to suffer. Which also creates a mood of being dull, lonely and monotonous. The couple, Ellen and Paul, has been arguing about what they're going through. Ellen begs her husband to leave the place and stay at the city where they can get more decent clothes and food to eat. But Paul didn't want to leave because he still believes that the soil is still fine for farming, that one day the storm will stop and the sunlight will come back.…

Once upon a time, in a small and forgotten village in the outskirts, lived a poor farmer's family, The Babbitts. They were one of the seven families living in the small village, that didn't even have a name. There were seven farms and every farm had one small field each where they grew their food, mostly potatoes, carrots and some beans, but the earth was dry and the harvest bad. This meant work around the clock for the whole family, even for the three children. The two oldest boys, Arnold and Evert, plowed and seed the field with their old donkey and stale tools and at the same time, the youngest girl, Petronella, had to clean the house and cook food even if she dreamt of plowing the field and digging in the dry…

The brightness of the early morning sun woke me up from my deep sleep. I walked down the stairs with eyes that were half opened still drowned in the lake of drowsiness when the striking red – colored calendar shocked my eyes. ’22 December’ was the date on the calendar. I smiled upon seeing the date. It was mother’s day. Every year, my younger brother, younger sister and I always plan something special for our mother on this beloved day and this year I was planning to do something different. No more gifts, just a simple dish cooked by the hands of my siblings and me. On that bright and happy day, the three of us made our way to the supermarket located next to our house. Excitements and enthusiasm were flowing in every cell in our bodies. All we could think of during that shopping time was that unforgettable smile that would form on her lips when she was on cloud nine. After buying all the ingredients need to cook our family specialty, we went back home and headed to the kitchen. Unwrapping the plastic bag containing the ingredients, I threw a glance at the clock and realized that it was already 5 p.m. One hour before mum’s arrival. As the captain of this plan, I put my younger brother and younger sister on the task that each of them was good at. I played the role of a chef and in charge of the cooking and seasoning while they were in charge of cutting, chopping, and preparing the ingredients. Pots clang, oil sizzled and soon our tiny kitchen was filled with the aromatic smell of the meatballs and spaghetti, our family specialty. Suddenly I heard a familiar clacking sound coming from high heels shoes. It was my mother. ‘‘Just in time,’’ I told my self with a content smile. In the count of three – one, two, three, the three of us shouted “Happy Mother’s Day!” when mum opened the door. She looked surprise as well as happy but not the kind of happiness that I…

The short story Poison by Roald Dahl is set in India when it is still under the British rule. In this story the theme is represented by Harry, who thinks that the krait has crawled on his stomach and has made Timber call a doctor for help to solve the situation. The entire time I was reading the story, I thought that the main conflict is between the Harry, Timber, Dr. Ganderbai and the krait on Harry's stomach. But in the last few paragraphs, I realize that Dahl's real point is about racism. For many hours and intense work to diffuse the krait on Harry’s stomach they discover that there was no krait in the first place. This represents the theme that Harry had a misunderstanding with his sheets and Timber and the Dr. Ganderbai could have been avoided. Harry was perfectly willing to let Dr. Ganderbai help him get rid of the krait as long as his life wasn’t in danger, but as soon as Ganderbai dared to question Harry, he made rude nasty remark to the Dr. and showed his true colors. Roald Dahl writes the story using tension and suspense. He makes the readers uncertain about the characters and the krait. The suspense in the story made me turn the pages. I felt frighten for Harry and made it hanging in midair. Roald Dahl writes Poison in first person point of view. It was a great story of my favorite short stories. It really made me want to finish the story and know what happens to Harry and the krait.…

Their first baby, a daughter, was born in January 1922, when my mother was 26 years old. The second baby, a son, was born in March 1923. They were renting farms; my father, besides working his own fields, also was a hired man for two other farmers. They had no capital initially, and had to gain it slowly, working from dawn until midnight every day. My town-bred mother learned to set hens and raise chickens, feed pigs, milk cows, plant and harvest a garden, and can every fruit and vegetable she could scrounge. She carried water nearly a quarter of a mile from the well to fill her wash boilers in order to do her laundry on a scrub board. She learned to shuck grain, feed threshers, shuck and husk corn, feed corn pickers. In September 1925, the third baby came, and in June 1927, the fourth child – both daughters. In 1930, my parents had enough money to buy their own farm, and that March they moved all their livestock and belongings themselves, 55 miles over rutted, muddy…

“Poor people put a low value on themselves and their efforts” (Daymond John). This represents the great work many underprivileged people must go through to earn simple things that would be easy to acquire for people of a wealthy society. People trapped in a lower class have a difficult time attaining happiness. A poor maid’s daughter struggles for a simple friendship and to gain respect from her peers and adults alike, but fails to accomplish this. A bright girl with the highest grades in her school wishes to receive the Scholarship jacket, a token of her hard work in school for eight years, but her social status and wealth conflict with reaching her wish. A woman who marries a poor husband desires the luxury and finery of being wealthy, but she fails to find this wealth and is obliged to find happiness with hard work and struggle.
