Anything Goes Play Review
Anything Goes Play Review

On Thursday, February 20th, I finally saw my first college play. Unlike the majority of plays I’ve seen in the past, Anything Goes actually caught my attention for once. Musicals and plays were big in my high school, but East Central took it to the next level in terms of talent and preparation. After watching the play, I came to the conclusion that Mrs. Grace Austin did a wonderful job as the director, putting on an intriguing show.

I’m no expert in terms of set design, but I was really impressed with how real it looked. While watching the play, I could easily imagine myself being on that ship. What made it look most lifelike was the lifesavers hanging up alongside the walls of the ship’s staircases, and the authentic looking wood making up parts of the ship.

Opposite of the set design, I thought that the lighting could actually have been a little better. While there was nothing actually wrong with the lights, I think there was room for improvement. The lights were very simple throughout most of the play, which is sometimes good, but there could have been more color and movements with the lights to make it more exciting. The spotlight, however, was perfect. As for special effects, there was nothing noticeable besides the lights.

Good thing that the play had decent lighting, that way the audience was able to see the perfectly fitting costumes. Everyone was mostly dressed up and looking nice to match the luxury theme. I liked everything about the costumes, but I didn’t get why the angel costume was red. It would have made more sense to be in white, but did not make much of a difference.

All of these things came into play to make a pretty good performance. The main characters were Riley Dunn who played Billy, Sam Rodgers who played Hope, Lee Garner who played Evelyn, and Sarah Hopp who played Reno.

Overall, Anything Goes turned out to be a pretty good

The style in which the play was performed was presentational although there are some parts of realism because situations like these actually do happen. The actors played multiple characters and morphed into each one. The morphing shows visible changes of character. They had great versatility of characters and played each one with passion for the role. The facial expressions they used seemed to add to the way they acted and made us, as an audience believe their roles much more. Other presentational aspects include the use of direct address and poetic narration throughout the performance.…

I like the set design of the play it looks realistic it seems like you are living in moment. For example, the wall was made of wood but the color contrast gave a realist impression. Also, the set design is important because it gives idea to audience where the setting of the play is located. Although the building in this play were relatively new, the original Broadway play set design was very worn out. In my opinion, if the play was old then the set design should look like the original Broadway play because on Avenue Q middle and lower class family leave. The apartment look like they leave on Avenue A. In additional, the costume is also important so the audience can figure out who they are. I think costume also show the personality of a character like upper, middle, and lower class and the costume designer of this play did great work. Especially, when two or three character wearing black cloths and the puppets were in red, blue, and green this shows the color…

In the beginning of the play all of the lights were out and the spotlight was on the main character, Tracy Turnblad. It was very effective to make sure that all eyes were on her for the opening scene. I liked how they set the stage up where on the far right of the stage was at first a bed that Tracy was in and then they turned…

The set was well made and fit the time period quite nicely, but I could not help but feel it could have used a few more props to give the audience a better sense of immersion. It was often hard to tell where the scene was, or if the characters had changed scenes or not. Using more props would also give more distinction between events and places, making the overall scenes more memorable. One of the strongest points in the play was the costumes. They all were extraordinarily well made, and looked authentic. Some of the notable mentions are Prince Pedro’s uniform, the watchmen’s uniforms, and all the costumes in the ball scene. The costumes helped the audience remember which characters are which, and make the play more memorable.…

The set was absolutely stunning. It involved two raked platforms which were screwed to the actual floor of the stage, three flat platforms on the back, and two bridges connecting the flat platforms to the raked ones. The gap between the floor and the top of the back platforms were covered with burlap which gave it a very distinguished rustic look. The platforms were all painted and textured to make it look distressed and dirty and the floor was painted up to the audience. The backdrop was painted to look like a sky with rolling fields off in the distance and big fluffy clouds. Everything looked exceptionally realistic and it was gorgeous. The audience could tell that tons of work went into creating this alternate reality. The colors used were fairly basic, mainly blues and browns, but they represented the symbolism well. Due to the amount of times water and dirt are mentioned in the show, the sets color palette reflected the script…

I really enjoyed how minimalist the set was for this show because while the overall setting of the South was important, the interaction of the characters was made the focal point of the show. It was a good choice because it reinforced the theme of getting to know someone else’s side of the story that the play showcased. It also help aid the fact that the play was told in a flashback, and that all the events had already occurred. It was a good style choice for this…

The designers of the play are Basil Jones, Adrian Kohler, and Rae Smith; they created beautiful sets and costumes. The setting was very beautifully shown, but it was very simple. The stage which had no curtain was empty, apart from a projection at the back which was shaped like a torn piece of paper. This was effective because they used the projection to tell the audience what time of day it was, what season it was, and the time period. The projection was also cleverly used to move the story forward. The atmosphere in the Theatre was dark and dusty, this was created by dim blue lighting and was effective because it created the mood and the bare stage invited the…

In my opinion, the most successful aspect in this play was the actresses, not just because they were good, but rather because they were incredibly believable. I did not feel that I was watching actors on the stage, rather that I was watching the lives of the six individuals unfold. They became their characters. A perfect example of this can be seen when Sabrina Hyman, who was playing the part of Truvy, was decorating the salon for Christmas and had to improv. While placing tinsel on the couch she was unable to keep it on the desired spot, because it kept falling off of the arm. Initially when she realized that the tinsel was not staying in its place she did not panic, as one would have thought. Instead she simply tried again, and then even a third time without showing any signs of a problem, she had to finally walk away without properly placing the tinsel where it should have been. This quick change in events did not throw her off in the least; she played it off like nothing was wrong. She played it off, as Truvy Jones would have in real life. Although I did feel that the acting in the play was truly amazing I did have two problems, and a couple of instances where I was given a…

There are many different choices that have been made to the set to alter the effects of the how the play is presented. The stage was set out in a professional manner with the use of props being very creative. The use of the area being divided into three separate stage areas made the use of scene changing easier and helped the audience to understand the setting. The stage that we were provided with for the production had very limited space and little room to work with but we used what we had well. The costumes that were use were very simple and effective. With…

Scenic Designer John Iacovelli did a phenomenal job building a set that would feel like the audience and the actors were inside a cozy country home down to the last details of the books and pictures of the shelf that made it feel homey. The scenic design visually brought the welcoming and relaxed atmosphere to life. Lighting Designer Kent Dorsey too brought the visual atmosphere of the play come to life the touch of the yellow lighting in the room brought warmth to the theater and the dimming of the lights, as well as the light on the table, stands subtly organized allowed for the atmosphere to feel more realistic and homey to the audience. Alongside these two phenomenal designers is designer of sound Lindsey Putman who brought the atmosphere to life in the presence of sound. One could close their eyes and still feel like they were on a warm home by simply listening to the sound of sometimes silence, the sound of the radio playing in the background, and even the sound of Vanya quietly stirring his coffee in the morning and the sound of the spoon hitting against the walls of the cup. From the biggest sound down to the smallest, they all had a specific place to transform the atmosphere at one point from a country home to the empty atmosphere galaxy world of a…

When you are first walking into the theatre you see the set and it was put together how you would expect it to look in the mid-nineties. The set was done in an apartment style setting; it had the basic set up but with the addition of a photographer’s dark room along with prints of the work on the wall. On the walls you could see some kind of splattering and it honestly had me wondering if it was part of the play or the material had been reused and not redone. Then you hear the music playing as you walk to your seat. The music selection was rather suspenseful and thrilling it made you really think about what kind of play you were going to experience.…

The piece is beautiful, but also not distracting either since it is made of wood just like the background. It is also abstract since the ship would proportionately be much larger lending to the fantastical nature of the play, and lending to the limited budget ascetic it as often in low budget productions. Since in low budget productions resources are often spent on a few pieces to give the illusion of higher production values. Since the entire set is made from wood the set can be representative of multiple backgrounds. The organic quality of the wood lends to the natural feel of the island, while the constructed aspect of the wood can lend to ships and other mend made scenes as well. The only special pieces are also reminiscent of choices a child production might make: plush toys representing wild animals, wooden swords, music carried out by actors using modern instruments, people covered in black physically waving dresses to represent wind, casting shadows through sheets to represent sailing ships etc.…

Another thing that made the show very succesful was the objects and the sets in the show. This aspect of the show was important in making the show great because it just added on to the wonderful acting done by the performers. It also helped in making the scenes much more realistic and gave the audience something to visualize. The sets and the objects used in the show were great because the frames and the decor on the walls made the set very realistic and gave it a bar feeling. The jukebox really added to the scenes as well. In specific, one of the…

    Beautiful Musical Play

One thing i really liked about this musical was the lighting. It honestly intrigued me very much so. There were parts when the lights would dim and didn't understand why, but i soon figures out there had been a mood change among the scene and the lighting difference was needed. The lighting was colored at some points if I remember correctly, but only at the more dramatic and/or intense points which I really liked. Then at other points in the show besides the just normal lights to light up the stage, they had immense spotlights to highlight main characters and the facials of the standby…
